I found a pocket watch yesterday that I'm not sure how old it is. Site dates to 1849-69. Also more modern stuff nearby. I had no idea that pocket watches have been around for so long.

If you open it up, and study the innards, perhaps you can date this specific one ?

As Tom said, open it up. Sometimes the maker leaves date stamps on the inner components

If it was a quality brand, U. S. Pocket watch, most of the makers would engrave a serial number on the back plate of the movement (not the case). There are web sites and books with manufacturer date by serial number. Can you tell the name of the manufacturer on yours?
