What kind of key is this?

I found this the other day and have no idea what it is. I believe it is either brass or bronze. There is a round hole about 1/2 inch deep on the one end.

No it is not threaded. I keep hearing something for a fireplace, but it doesn't seem like anything I have seen for a fireplace. Huntindog like in 4 legged?

Could have been a press fit and the shaft rusted out...
Don't know that's just what it looks like to me.
