A mix of molasses and water will clean rust from any steel or iron artifact, if soaked for a couple weeks. A mix of between 30/70 to 50/50 molasses/water mix ratio works well.

This will completely remove all rust, taking it down to bare metal. It does not produce any harmful chemicals or gasses, and used solution is organic, and can be dumped down the drain, even in septic tank systems.

Mix up the molasses/water in a closeable container* large enough to completely submerge the item.
Let it soak 2 weeks and pull it out and rinse with water. If it's "not done", put it back for a few more days.
If it IS completely rust-free, IMMEDIATELY protect it with wax, oil, grease, etc., because it will start to rust right away.

*THIS MIXTURE WILL ATTRACT FLIES AND ANTS, AND DOESN'T SMELL THAT GOOD.

This only works on "bare" metal - unpainted, unplated. Caked-on dirt and mud should be washed off before using this method.

Are you using unsulphered?...I'm wondering about the residual sulpher acting corrosively..
