I was hunting a local tear-out yesterday, and among other finds, I dug out this small aluminum item. It came out a little squished, but I was able to bend it roughly back into shape when I cleaned it up in the sink. It was dug in the same vicinity and from about the same 7” depth as the Indian in the picture, and I also found a 1901 Indian close by from similar depth, so I’m thinking it might be of similar age. It’s smaller than an IHP, the inside surface is smooth, and there’s a little reeding around the top of the outside surface which I figure is to give your fingers some grip to pull or twist it off of whatever it was attached to.

I figured the research would be easy with all the lettering, but so far, I’ve come up empty... I assume it’s a cap of some sort (old medicine vile??), or maybe the end off of some sort of electrical fuse? Anyway, I was hoping someone else might have better luck than me finding a match for what this cap came from? Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

It might be a medicine container cap from Hametz Lab.

Thanks, Tom...yep, that’s what I was originally thinking too. The stylized “O” symbol in the center even looks like a hydrocarbon ring, but I couldn’t find anything. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before, but this time, I tried H.A. Metz...and boom, lots of hits:

The company was incorporated in 1917, and remained in business at least until to about the mid- to late-1920s. Interestingly, it also appears that the company was involved in a “Trading With The Enemy” hearing and lawsuit for stock purchases and other business related to a German company in World War I. The lawsuit continued through 1925, when the charges were dropped.

Thanks for the well wishes, Mark! Yep, detecting and flying...it's like Yin and Yang - opposite sides of the same coin  Both can get pretty technical, just one's above the ground, the other below ;) Yes, I'm afraid my posting and detecting have slowed down significantly - I've had a sudden health issue that affected my hearing significantly, which has shifted my priorities a bit. My hearing has improved a decent amount, and I've been able to return to flying, which has been a huge relief - it's my true passion, and it's how I make my living. And I'm still detecting...it just sounds a bit different!
