Found this in the front yard of an 1880s house. It has some heft to it. Thanks for any ideas.

Looks like the inside of a fishing reel to me. But not sure about the age/technology. With the teeth shaped like they are it almost seems like a device designed to allow movement in one direction but not the other.

Yep. For old drum brakes.

Cliff

Thanks for all the replies. I went out and found a bunch of photos of brake adjusters and they do have that one-way ratchet disk on them that looks very similar to the thing I found. I couldn't, however, find one that had that extra disk at the other end.

Thanks again.

I see the strong resemblance, but the size makes me wonder... if you shrink the picture down so the cent is 3/4” then it seems too small. And the construction seems wimpy for it... but I could certainly be wrong.

I see what you are saying. Maybe for something like a go-cart or mini-bike?

Cliff

It's a ratchet for a tarp or swimming pool winter cover. The hole on one end is where the cable goes thru to ratchet it tight.

Thank you History Hippy. That is very plausible. I found a photo online. I think it it maybe a ratchet of some kind due to the hole and the disk at both ends.
