This will be my first post so I apologize in advance if it doesn’t upload correctly. I recently started metal detecting and I came across this mass of metal. It is very heavy for its size. I am wondering if anyone else has found something similar and if anyone knows what it may be. I found it in a small town in Nebraska that was established in the mid 1800s. Was about 5 inches in the soil.

It looks like some kind of metal drippings, forge maybe. You might do a magnet test on it, see if it is ferrous materiel.

Welcome to the forum and good luck with this fascinating hobby!

Melted metal glob. "Heavy for its size" makes me think lead. The reddish tone may indicate iron or brass or copper. Could be left by a blacksmith, or just a fire. Value is scrap metal value, whatever metal it is.
Magnet test and file a spot to see true color.
Happy hunting!
