Well, nothing too exciting to post, but even these are getting tough to find anymore......
I popped the question at an 1850 house out in the boondocks.....I knew my big competitor knew and detected the house across the street last summer and sure enough the owner here said he hit her up as well.....I was heartbroken to hear that , especially knowing this guy swings a CTX....but I had a go at it anyway......
There was a decent amount of targets .....not a lot of deep high tones .....but the one sweet high tone made my day.....I flipped the plug and moved some dirt with my pinpointer and saw 2 shiny reeded edges :yes:
After digging out the quarters the pinpointer went off again just off to the side and there was very nice looking merc.
Not much else after that tho.....

Sometimes it is in the shadows we find the treasure. Following you competition and finding whats missed is a satisfying reward. Congrats Bob on the 2 GW's, the Merc, the great looking Indian and all the rest. Well earned satisfaction indeed. Trapper

I Luv those in-situ reveal pix ! I was totally expecting to see some bust quarters, since you're from the east coast. But ... alas.... washingtons ?? :?: Oh well, you made up for it with the IH and beautiful green patina

SWEET ! Nice silver spill you lucky dog. Congrats on a great hunt, the Ihp is a bonus as well. Glad to see the other guy missed a few. HH Mark

I know you're just ribbing him about the GWs, but one thing I learned a few months ago when we did that unscientific survey of "hardest coins to find" was that silver Washington quarters are not as common as I thought. I found this surprising because I had dug a few of them within the first year of detecting...but all on private dirt.

A few decades of early metal detectorists cherry picking silver quarter and other big high conductor signals has made them relatively scarce today, particularly in public dirt.

Below is that summary I compiled from that discussion back in March. I think if more new and casual detectorists answered the survey you'd find that far, far fewer than 68% have found a silver GW quarter (and even fewer on did so on public dirt).

Toy-soldier : Interesting post. And a point I have never seen addressed. (Re.: the point quoted above). Especially in-so-far as what I put in bold.

I DISTINCTLY remember, as a 13 or 14-yr. old, with my first detector (Whites 66TR, in about 1975-ish), that: After 6 months or so of running around town, that ... yes .... I got several silver washington quarters. BUT ZERO MERCURY DIMES hence far, by then.

This is because, of course, the quarters presented a much bigger target, for those yester-year insensitive detectors. So while I may have struggled to get a dime beyond 3" or 4", yet a quarter was a much easier target at that depth.

Thus you're right: Those early hunters of parks and schools un-wittingly picked off the common '40s', 50's, 60's silver washingtons , and walker & benjamin halves, easier than the silver dimes of those same date ranges.

But this is only true of "public dirt". Ie.: parks or schools that got hammered in the old all-metal TR days, or the Vlf/TR days. It would not be true of yards that have never been worked.

It'd be interesting to know what % of each members finds were WA quarters (or any other form of coin).

For instance, I've found around 185 silver coins lifetime and 15 of those have been WA quarters. That puts me at around 8%. I would only count once in your above count but have found several.

Cool to be aggregating this data through a survey!

I had a detector when I was a kid in the 1980s. All I ever did was detect my yard. I remember finding some pennies and trash, and then I moved on to burying toys and "finding" them. I already rode my bike all over the neighborhood, so I kick myself now for not thinking about the huge, old public park on one side of my neighborhood or the old public school on the other side of my neighborhood.

I agree toy soldier on finding the Washington quarter. I've noticed over the years that I find just as many Barbers or Standing Liberties as I do Washington silver quarters. I thought it was just me...
