Hi all,
Hoping someone can tell me what this was used for. We have found several of these while detecting two old farm sites in Western New York.
We found most of them at one old house site that has been cleared off and turned into fields before the 1900's as it is a part of our farm and we know the history since the 1900's.
This site has produced coins but none dated newer than 1865 which is about when we think it was abandoned.
The two loops are one piece and made of steel. The round disc is cast around the loops and the material is heavy, non-magnetic and seems like hard lead similar to modern wheel weights.
Some of these show extreme wear to the loops and one still has a link of chain attached to it.
They seem like some sort of horse rigging but searching google images has come up short.
Thanks for looking.
