Hello Folks
I was out detecting one of my favorite places and recovered this. The area I recovered it from is near a stream and is kind of a hollow in the woods. It was about eight inches down in the soil.
From my quick research and what I have been told so far it is a 3000 plus year old copper adz, or copper celt .
I am going to try to get an expert opinion from someone on staff at one of the local big colleges nearby, in the meantime feel free to burst my bubble if you don't think it is what I have been lead to believe.

Just from the looks of it, I'd say you're probably on the right track. There are some 'copper culture' folks on here who may be able to give you some more info. Great find and congrats. : )

Nice old old ax! Did I say old? You guys kill me with those old finds.

Update from some friendly archaeologists ....

Hello Folks
New York State and Vassar college archaeologists have confirmed that it is a copper adz, one commented that it is a very fine example. From what I gather in their emails it dates from 1500 to 3000 BC so 3500 to 5000 years old. In order to narrow it down to it would have to be submitted for chemical analysis.
I appreciate everyone's help in identifying this object.
Happy Hunting
