With all the record keeping and papers to keep track of when it comes to bullion, it's possible he rejected it because it was too small a transaction.
Dealers don't want the paperwork hassle for an item that's only going to bring in a couple of dollars. If the earring was part of a group of precious metal items that would be different.

It was with a silver ring and necklace.Ring from Thailand and necklace Mexico.
