I found this shape while digging for what turned out to be a nail. It feels similar to brick. It washes away a bit when put under water and it was surrounded by other chunks of the same material. Very light, and most of it
very brittle.

This one and one other I found had smooth edges. Most of it was just random spots in the dirt of this same material. Some this red brick color and some a grayish color, some both.

It's worth noting that I ran across this in the same area I've found 2 1830s coins, a couple of 1800s buttons, a ton of old square nails, and a ring.

I stopped digging as there seemed to be no end to this stuff.

Anyone have any advice on what this could be?

Could be brick, some brick gets soft like that especially if its been in a fire.
