Spirit and Opportunity were rovers launched into space and designed to land on Mars...then examine that planet looking for evidence of life.
This is exactly what they did, they landed on the planet in 2004
The funny thing is both of these contraptions were designed and built for 90 day missions but they went way beyond that.

Spirit lasted until 2010, Opportunity kept going until last June when it got buried in a massive dust storm and handlers believe the wind was not strong enough to sweep the dust off the solar panels....it was fatal.
Opportunity was sent hundreds of commands since then but no luck so today is the day NASA is finally ending the mission.
Opportunity was declared dead on Sol 5352...not Sol 90 as originally planned.
If there was any piece of equiptment NASA designed, built or used that was better at doing it's job or outperformed all expectations more than it designers thought possible than this one I don't know what that is.

The little explorer that could...and did.

Great job, both of you.

Amazing job done!
There is a netflix show called 7 Days Out and one episode is about the ending of the Cassini mission. It's a great explanation of what they accomplished and how they ended it, must watch episode!
