I would like to figure out what type of metal I have found. One is a piece of jewelry and the other is a solid mass of some heavy, untarnished (bluish in color) metal. Is there a non-destructive method to figure out what type of metal I have found?

Yup... pics are always very helpful in situations like this.

Jewelry Fragment

This solid jewelry fragment came out of the ground about 2 inches deep. Either it was recently llost and is silver, possibly white gold or platinum. My guess is that it is an earring or a pendant. From a side view there appears to be a weld/solder seam.

I'd like to figure out what it is made of.

toss it in a jar of nitric acid. if it disappears.....it wasn't gold.

If you have a coin shop around you take it there and they can do an acid test on it and usually don't charge anything.. To me it looks like stainless steel...
But it could be what you said as well...

I would take the foil off, and eat the chocolate  (Just kiddin ya) Is it hollow on the back or a solid piece?

Bill

I was going to post its a Hersheys Kiss but figured I would post 1 non-sarcastic post today instead :D

You can drop it in a small cup of bleach. If it starts to tarnish it is silver.

what kind of reading too you get from your MD, does it give the same reading as a silver ring?
