Location
Nova Scotia, Canada, eh.
i dug this thing up in an old hay field Sunday.
it was about 8 inches down, but the field has been plowed over the years, so that depth isn't much of an indication of age.
it looks like maybe it's of French origin from the design on the key thing, the "key" looking part will turn, but it's bent up and i don't want to break it trying to straighten things out. :(
looks like remnants of iron near the tip on the side of the "key". the small holes in the plate are all threaded except for one but the end of the key thingy doesn't appear to be threaded on the inside.
the hole in the plate where the "key" goes through it looks hexagonal as well as the key itself having a similar hex shape near the tip. possibly something that was pushed in, turned and then released to hold it in position? :?:
any ideas? furniture hardware, window latch, door from a clock, rifle part?
thanks for looking,

Pete :D

I am wondering why two of the holes are threaded and a valve key should be square inside the end

all but one of those little holes are threaded, so this item wasn't likely screwed to a piece of wood, something else was screwed to it. and as opposed to a square hole in the end, in the 4th pic and the last pic you can see remnants of iron on the side of it, near the end and kind of a groove there as well.
i don't really "want" to try straightening it out, but i might give it a go, i'm sure it'll make more sense if it was back into it's original shape. i'll likely end up with 2 pieces.
