My first nickel trio

I took my Minelab Equinox 800 out for its 2nd maiden voyage yesterday to a park that has been heavily pounded since the mid 80s. It didn't let me down. I concentrated on the lawns where coins sink deep instead of the areas where the good shallow coins used to be. It was 30 degrees & Noxie chattered quite a bit but came through. I got a faint nickel signal, depth gauge pegged out, number 11 showing. Digging down 9" I found a smooth nickel sized coin. A little while later I got the same signal & 8" down up came another smooth nickel sized coin. I have learned in the past not to try & clean these type of coins until I can get home & use the right equipment…..field cleaning will usually damage the coin. One turned out to be an 1897 V nickel, and the other a Buffalo nickel with a barely readable date of 1926 plain. I also found a 1947-P Jefferson nickel in good shape. Among other things I found was a brass “Todays Dentristy” medallion, and a very old & corroded button. Today I found a nickel trio, V, Buffalo, & Jefferson! One thing I’ve learned about the Equinox is that the dept gauge is almost useless and it should only be interpreted as “shallow” or “deep”, and that’s sad because a detector of this quality should have an excellent depth indicator. I have been over this same patch of lawn with my Whites MXT many times, and it would have never found these coins, and didn’t…….LOL

Congrats on the Trio! Man the Oregon dirt reeks havoc on your coins. If you found 1 regular Jefferson you would have a Quad!! :D

Seriously, congrats on the V, Buff, and Silver!

Golly a real nickle dug trifecta! No Vs and Buffs that look new.

Lol, congratulations nice dogs, sir

Nice nickel pack. The Equinox is good at nickels. The depth gauge is calibrated for quarters, at 2 inches per bar. It's usually about right on quarters, but only generally "deep or shallow" useful for other coins. Various non-coin objects can give depth readings all over the place.

Sweet!!
I just pulled a Nickel Trifecta on Tuesday.... Also here in Oregon.
1869 Shield
1902 V
1940 Jefferson
I was really hoping to pop a Buffalo that day!
What part of Oregon are you in?
