I have never used a tumbler to clean coins and such, and wonder how? I have a tumbler that uses 3 barrels so it can do different steps at the same time :P Obviously ;)

For pocket change I use aquarium gravel, water and dishwashing liquid. For pennies I add kaboom, it puts a shine to them. For clad I add CLR it also puts a shine to them. Don't clean pennies with clad. They'll have a copper tint to them. I tumble for a hour. And never tumble any coin that may have any value to it.

I use sand. As the coins clean it gets less coarse and improves the finish.
Finish off with vermiculite. Don't know if its called the same in the States. A pore in roof insulation material. Buffs up the finish.

For a better quality shine use rice, corn cob (birdcage bedding) or crushed walnut shell (ammo reloading supply) and some powdered jewelers rouge added. Tumble dry. The media can be reused for years. This is for a more polished finish, not an initial cleaning.
