I've heard bags of pennies are still sold at banks and i've heard they aren't.

What is it?

If you have a bank with a coin machine, you can ask about buying the bags when they get full. Some banks will allow it and some won't. It never hurts to ask. : )

Would you like a bag or two??

My bank's coin machine goes through $100 to $300 in pennies a week. $50 bags which is 5000 pennies.(with an occasional surprise foreign, indian head, or wheats!)

My bank doesnt have a coin machine unfortunately.

The coin machine counts the coins that go in the bags, supposedly, but they also weigh them, at least at KT's bank.

KT does not know of the Fed ever making BAGS of pennies, like your original question asked, but they have sold bags of quarters to collectors from the US Mint...all one year and denomination, freshly minted. And they sell rolls now also, but their cost is prohibitive to order from the US Mint due to postage for those heavy items.

Better to just get them from the bank. Banks usually have rolls of new coins shipped to them every year...that's how they get into circulation. When the state quarter series was going on, you could ask at my bank and buy a roll of the most recent quarters they had come in, but since KT lives west of the Mississippi River, they were always Denver mint. Had to go to a Memphis bank to get any that were Philadelphia mint!

I still haven't found a bank with a coin machines anywhere near my area however I did find that one of the casinos around here cashes loose change with no fee. They'll also sell you bags if you ask nicely.
