I have a chance to pick up a mid 1990's Garrett Master Hunter 10X in near mint condition for $80 with a good quality coil on it. It swings a bit heavy like it would tire your arm out after a while , but looks like a good quality detector (lots of bells and whistles). I don't know much about detectors. Is that a deal or should I pass on it?

Along with the BH that you got for $5, you're well on your way to having more detectors than I do.

I can't help on the machine you're asking about though. Perhaps Tabdog or Dan can help out.

I am unfammiliar with the unit. Garrett made some excellent detectors and it sounds like it may be one.
If it has a hoop (loop) handle then its an early version and may be worth 80 bucks but no more.

I believe you are referring to the Garrett Grand Master Hunter CX if it is from the mid-nineties. This is a high quality metal detector and well worth more than $80. So, you are getting a very good deal and should most definitely "go for it".

My very first metal detector was the original Grand Master Hunter from 1988. I still own and use this detector. It works as well as it did on the day I took it out of the box. Mind you, it is no longer my primary detector as I have upgraded since then, I still enjoy swinging it around from time to time. I've made some pretty good finds with it over the years.

Here are some links to offer you some more info regarding this detector.

The video is actually for the CX Plus, which is basically the same detector with an LCD meter rather than analog meter.

Feel free to ask for advice at any time. Best of luck to you! Happy Hunting!
