Was out last Saturday with my buddy Steve and got a nice permission from a house from 1822. Oddly the house yard offered nothing (although I'm going back for sure and sweeping much slower) - the back fields offered some great finds.
I hit an 1829 large cent, 1820 large cent, and then a mystery coin that was pretty bleak - definitely a colonial era, but very worn. After a bit of drying out and cleaning up a got the faint outline of a horses head and knew exactly what I had found - a New Jersey copper!
These things are pretty rare and even more so here in Upstate NY; I was thrilled regardless the condition. I've posted the coin below, you can make out the outline of the horses head and just a faint bit of the plow...the obverse is totally blank. I can't wait to hit it again this weekend...just a tip of the iceberg for sure.
The NJ example is not my coin, just a comparison so you can ID the features of my find.
