Went to a friend's house who lives in an area with some historical homes. Theirs traces to about 1900 and they actually said "Dig anywhere you want!". He's found horseshoes and bottles in his backyard when he was landscaping in the past. He said he found coal everywhere as well. (I didn't ask to "dig" but those were his words). :)

It turns out my detector hit on the coal, too! The yard was a constant ringing in my ears.

Went to the curbstrip with limited time and found two dimes. One 1996 about 1" deep. Then another, EIGHT inches deep, and...also a 96! What the heck?! :)

At some places there just doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to coin depth.

Is the coal ringing up in the low iron range?

Curb strips are also known as ROW (right of way) strips. Because they are a utility right of way, there are many spots where dirt has been disturbed over the years. In many cases, that would explain the widely varying depths.

I love curb strips. Several months ago I was hunting one and found a DEEP pocketwatch where emeralds marked the hours and dots of gold were the minute marks.

A few days ago I found a 1718 Spanish 2Reale.

These spots can be fantastic
