Went to a friend's house who lives in an area with some historical homes. Theirs traces to about 1900 and they actually said "Dig anywhere you want!". He's found horseshoes and bottles in his backyard when he was landscaping in the past. He said he found coal everywhere as well. (I didn't ask to "dig" but those were his words). 
It turns out my detector hit on the coal, too! The yard was a constant ringing in my ears.
Went to the curbstrip with limited time and found two dimes. One 1996 about 1" deep. Then another, EIGHT inches deep, and...also a 96! What the heck?!
