Thought it was a valve, but??

Might be one of those valves they bang in to maple trees to drain the sap to make maple syrup. Not sure what they look like but with the back half of the tube cut away it would make sense for the sap to drain down the tube and out in to the bucket that would be hung on the end.

Maple taps have no valve. Except for some of the very modern ones, they are always just a small piece of hollowed out material.
