Back then this was just another day at the ballpark, 90 years later only two are on this list, Ty Cobb and Pete Rose.

The two hits leaders were probably the two grittiest players of all time as well. Both played the game all out all the time.

I seem to remember that someone wrote a book recently about how Ty Cobb got a reputation as a nasty player and a racist. The book explained how the reputation was completely false. I'll try to find the book title. (back from google) It's "Ty Cobb - A Terrible Beauty". by Charles Leerhsen

If you are seen sharpening your cleats so you can damage flesh on your way to sliding into bases that doesn't make you an angel.

Lots of players did this to improve grip and speed but not many had an ulterior motive and aimed for opponents legs as he did.
Lots of rumors about this guy but this fact was proved to be true.
