I can’t identify the language on this button or what it might be from. Found it detecting on an old farm in upstate New York. It may be silver but I have not tested it. It is the size of a dime( I found this 1937 merc on the same hunt). Any help is appreciated.

UPDATE: I cleaned the find with water and put under 60x magnification. The markings appear to be possibly carved by hand. They are irregular and there appear to be many areas where the carving tool bit into the rim while creating the linear vertical grooves.:wow:

I’m way out of my realm here. Calling all history, Cyrillic language and/or button experts!

Could it be a Russian coat of arms with old Russian alphabet writing? Cyrillic??

I agree. Any hope I have of identifying it is likely in the inscription.

Hopefully someone with knowledge of this language can help me out. I may have to try posting in a Slavic language-oriented forum for that.

Any suggestions of who or where to go would be great if anyone has ideas.

I don't think that is all that old but yea, think that is Slavic or maybe Chech Republic?

Thanks for the feedback. What feature(s) are making you think it’s more modern?

I’m not too experienced when it comes to buttons. Especially foreign ones.

If you can post a higher resolution shot of the text on the button we may be able to figure it out. I've enlarged it, maybe not clear enough though pretty sure it is not Cyrillic Arabic or something like that. I am thinking Scandinavian or Nordic. IMO definitely a coat of arms. Looks like cast silver.

"OIC - K or H - LSIUN" although I don't think the first letter is an O, I don't know what else it would be.

Thanks Mikey, this is getting more interesting by the day. I have updated to include details of each section of text. ( sorry for rotation I could not figure out how to get them straight)

Hopefully someone can identify the origin of the characters and eventually what it means.

I will post any more detailed images of any area folks might need to see to help us figure this out!

The vertical ridges look modern to me. Also appears to have little natural wearing on it and was rough cast. If it is cast in silver and old thinking the detail quality would be better. Just my opinion though and I'm no button expert.

The thicker back to the first letter makes me think A rather than O

AICH Y SIUH or NICKLSIUN maybe?

You might have better luck contacting someone about the cot of arms..

Nice find regardless.

Thanks Joe,

I will have to look into the coat of arms, I haven't been able to find anything similar online. I'll have to try to locate an expert.

If anyone knows someone knowledgeable in this area please let me know!
