For all of you fine folks who are in the midst of the heat wave, keep in mind the dangers of how quickly heat stroke can sneak up on you at any age.

I pushed the limits years ago and almost collapsed. I was shaking, could barely walk when I stood up and it was like the movie DARK VICTORY with Betty Davis where it was daylight, but everything was turning to night suddenly.

Know your symptoms, stay hydrated, seek air conditioning, hunt when the sun is not up or after it has set. Any anyway, digging in rock hard ground is going to be extremely difficult. Better yet, wait until cooler weather and wetter soil conditions.

Ok. Class is dismissed.

Also realize "heat exhaustion" can happen before heat stroke, if you start feeling woozy like you might faint get inside right away and check your blood pressure, excessive heat and dehydration can cause your blood pressure to go way too low. (years ago I pushed myself too long in excessive heat painting railings in my yard, it took a few days to get back to normal, now I know better)

Be wise and remember the excessive heat can affect your health if you are not careful.

I’m in an “out in the elements “ industry, and one thing I’d like to add about hydration is……..stay away from the energy drinks, monsters, Red Bulls, etc during the heat

+1 glad you added that caution.

I would add that I get a reasonable amount of caffeine from my 2-3 cups of coffee a day, but I avoid energy drinks as way too much caffeine can cause health issues.

I keep hydrated with bottled water, but an occasional non-energy beverage like Gatorade that replaces electrolytes should be okay also, but any members who know otherwise please let us know.

NOTE: I just did a search and there is a caution about Gatorade as far as it's sugar and sodium content and use by people who are not athletes -

........hey, I do great with plain bottled water and it is so good when you are thirsty !

Few years back I was drinking Gatorade daily to stay hydrated on my work outside in the heat. After a few weeks I developed a bad case of kidney stones and had to go to ER. Most painful event I’ve ever had. Doctor told me to avoid Gatorade due to the electrolytes. Whether or not that’s true, I reluctantly gave it up.

Okay, thanks for sharing that !

After hearing that it makes me glad I never got in the habit of drinking Gatorade !

Quote from the link below:

"Because hydration is so important, how you stay hydrated is equally important. When the weather heats up, people often reach for sports drinks or tea to replenish or refresh themselves, but those liquids can work against you when it comes to forming kidney stones.
“Most sports drinks have a lot of sodium added, so they’re basically kidney stones in a cup,” says Dr. Kenneth Stallman.

Instead, opt for plain water, green tea, lemonade, or limeade. “Because citrate is a natural inhibitor of kidney stones and many people need more citrate in their diet, lemonade is a good choice – the real kind made with fresh lemons.......(end quote)

Nothing like plain water to satisfy your thirst and staying hydrated, but even then, it is possible to affect your health if you drink extreme amounts of water and overhydrate way too much.

Thanks for the post. Here in WY its mostly a dry heat which adds extra danger since you might not think about how hot it is. I have to constantly remind myself to drink water. So far its been cool here, as it was today in the mid 70s, but it can get extremely hot.

I volunteered to work a fossil survey several years ago in S. Dakota during July when it was hot. The lead paleontologist told us to were light colored moisture wicking long sleeve shirts, jeans, and a hat. What :?: I was surprised how well it worked. I also added a coolie towel around my neck which made it even better.

To protect myself from too much UV radiation from the sun when doing yard work I will wear a long sleeve shirt, jeans, and a hat.

Thanks for the extra advice! Those type of drinks advance dehydration in the body.

we had a tragedy in Georgia. a Sheriffs deputy , big guy, was on the shooting range in the heat. he had a heat stroke this week. someone called his Dad who followed the ambulance. The Deputy died on way to the hospital. His dad had a massive heart attack following and i think crashed and also died. it dont get much worse.

we will be around 105 this week

prayers for all the family.

Two biggest clues.
Chills and or you stop sweating.
Better take action quick if these happen.
Being alone in hot environment not the smartest thing either.
Take a buddy.
And watch each other.
Watch for strange behavior.
Talk to one another.
Heat can kill. No doubt.
Can kill healthy person too.
The body cannot keep up hydration wise in higher heat/humidity. All hydration does is buy you some time. You must eventually remove yourself from the heat so your body can catch up.
And back to back days of subjecting one’s self to higher heat not smart either.
Give your body time to recoup.

When you stop sweating and get turn white and clammy you're in trouble seek shade and water

Gatorade 0. No sugar. That's what I drink.

^^^ All great advise. I almost collapsed one day a few years back. Could hardly walk, clammy, shallow breathing. Somehow got in the shade and cooled down enough to get myself to the car. I was with 2 hunting partners. I had tried to eat a little something every hour and drink but that didn't help obviously. So listen to the advise here, those treasures will be there waiting for you, they are not gonna get up and walk off...stay safe people.

Delivering telephone books (remember those?) in Texas in August was about the "strokiest" I ever got. That was an absolutely hellish gig. About an hour in I didn't care anymore if that snarling dog ate me.
