Hello, I came across the following symbol on an old map. Can someone tell me what it might stand for? I haven't seen this one yet.

"C.B"

Hello, I found a dictionary of abbreviations for cartography and it had this.

C.B. Hollow concrete or cement block construction

https://www.lib.berkeley.edu/EART/abbrev.html This is the link to the dictionary. Hope this helps!

Hm, interesting, not sure that solves anything. So while the 'C.B' doesn't always show up, that little jagged symbol does more often. . .

This is from an 1876 map. Is this maybe a wall of some kind?

Hm. . . I found this on the Historic Aerials website, it's a possibility. Not 100% exactly the same thing, but awful close:

That's another one. That's closed at the bottom. The differences are in such small differences.

Ok, I found it, I think for sure now. . . it shows (for german map makers) that symbol is for a quarry:

Is there a culvert there or maybe a bridge? I wonder if the "cement block construction" someone above mentioned would help back that.

Haven't been there yet, but from what I understand it is all hilly, wooded area. A lot of mining was done in the area. But we'll keep all of that in mind if/when I ever get there.
