EVERYWHERE!
Question; when you scout a spot and see potential in that spot, do you over hype it in your head? IE: visions of old coins, buttons, gold etc. ? Or do you just go in with no real thought or wonder of whats there and hope for the best? This applies to detecting, dump and privy digs etc. I think i over hype my spots way to much and get discouraged some times. Anyone else do the same?

You're not the only one!
I did that a lot back in the day, some spots were better then I thought they would be, others were total duds...

To a degree, I learned long ago that its best to keep expectations in check until you have a solid reason not to, but that can be easier said than done.
A few years back I was finally in a position to detect my grandparents large back yard, house was built in the 1880's and had who knows how many owners previously, they bought it in the early 1950's and had 8 kids, lots of friends, climbing trees, clothe lines, I thought I was really going to hit the mother lode.
First downside I noticed was that all my uncles were big beer drinkers and partyers in the day, even as a kid I remember some of their epic yard filling bashes ,, So it was a pulltab/bottlecap nightmare. But no matter where I looked or how hard I tried, could not find anything except clad and a couple wheaties - Then I remembered, when I was a kid in the late 70's my grandfather showed me a new gizmo he got, a metal detector. For some reason it didn't spark my interest all that much, just thought "cool" then never thought about it again until I realized that he himself had picked that yard clean long ago.

Always tell yourself the next inch has the gold. That's how I make it to 8 hours at a time in location 😅

I do it too. Usually a permission that I have to wait for. A farm field that I have to wait to harvested is torture. Just got permission for 6 home sites that won't be accessible till fall.

Managing expectations is the key to happiness. But that’s easy to say. Harder to do. I had a train stop with a store and post office site. That was going to be the greatest spot ever! Until I got there and found the site was used as a dump. Not truck loads of trash, but train loads of trash. Needless to say I was let down.

I try to set my sights low and achievable. Just try to find something the age I think the site is. Anything more than that is a bonus.

Yes, of course. I do this all the time. I don't really get discouraged though. Some days the finds are better than others. But any finds are better than nothing. I still have spots that I KNOW have colonial silver coins...I just haven't found them YET! :D

I think it's normal to do that. I think the key is settling yourself down before the hunt. That way if you don't find much you're good with it. On the other hand if you find a gold coin you can say. "I KNEW it, I had the feeling. t's a win win.

I try to keep my expectations relatively low, but remain hopeful that I'll find a silver/old coin at the location. Though it seems there's always the thought in the back of my head picturing finding a bunch of good stuff. :mder:

I'm right there with ya brother. I kinda sorta start out by saying it is just good to get back out hunting. 10.5 seconds later I'm in the wondering stage like the rest of ya'll. :rofl2:

My expectations are always sky high and I'm most always disappointed. This will likely never change...

To some degree. It is because time has taught me to never discount any location because you never know.

I do look for the signs of a potential site. Houses with sandstone foundations, large old trees, etc.

I almost always go in with dreams of buried treasures and come out with bags of trash, but man do I have fun searching! I love this hobby.

Yep, today's going to be my silver dollar day! I get pocket change!!!
