I was hoping to go detecting this week and over the weekend... Not going to happen... just been too cold and snowy, and more of it coming this weekend, Saturday temps to stay low with windchills 15 to 17 below zero and I am near the coast where the water temps in low 40s should be moderating air temps, not this year last 3 years were almost snow free with temps all winter long in 40s and 50s, even next week all below normal temps expected... Last night they were saying Sunday maybe 3 to 5 inches now latest forecast calling for over a foot of snow Sunday and a little more Monday... been a strange fall and winter cold started in November and has only gotten worse, usually we get a January thaw doesn't look like its going to happen this year I can only hope Feb changes for the better... Last year pond next to my house never froze over this year its already 6 inches thick. At least those that skate are enjoying it.

Yep....

Been trying to get out to the beach the past couple weeks but it's been not so good weather here in SC. Now winter mix for this weekend so another weekend possibly shot.

Central NH forecast for Saturday....... -40 to -50 with windchill!!! I leave for a cruise a week from this Friday. It can't come soon enough. I might miss the boat intentionally on an island and set up shop doing face painting and building coconut bras for tourists. In my older years, I'm really starting to hate the cold weather and short days.

All my hobbies revolve around being able to do things after work. Hunting, fishing, metal detecting and relaxing on our pontoon boat at the local lake. None of these can be done in Jan- March where I live.

I left Jersey because of Taxes and the winters. I couldn't do the cold anymore. I retire in in a few months and will be doing charters and metal detecting and loving the southern weather. Although we get a bit of winter, it's not like up north

We seem to get different kinds of cold here in MD, sometimes dry, other times wet. If there's no wind and the temp is fairly dry, usually not a problem. But when we get that wet, biting cold and add in some wind, the cold goes through the skin right down to the bones and it's just painful.

I lived in Alaska for 3 years courtesy of Uncle Sam and the Air Force, and during the winter, I was routinely working outside in -45 to -60 degree temps using a snowblower to clear the pad in front of our bomb igloos. But the difference, besides the fact that we were well dressed for those temps, was that it was a dry cold, and we really didn't get any wind, unless there was a snowstorm. Don't get me wrong, -55 degrees is still friggin cold, but a dry cold feels different than a wet biting cold with windchill like we get in the N.E.

We are expecting winter weather here in PA too. Its all expected to be snow. Thats good. I dont want ice. Considering I went on my behind this morning walking my sons Husky. Watching her in this weather is fascinating. I swear she laughed at me falling.

I dunno what the big problem is with this east-coast-freeze stuff. I mean .... metal detectors work JUST FINE in the snow & ice & cold. RIGHT ?

Here's how I know that : Simply do the following air test : Wave your coil over a coin at 1" deep. Notice that it beeps just fine. RIGHT ? Ok, now put an ice cube over that same coin, and repeat the air test. Notice that the coin still beeps JUST FINE STILL ! :?:

So what's the big problem ?? Man you guys are a bunch of wimps ! :friends:

Welcome to our world Craig. I did hear your area was gonna see some real winter. Stay warm my friend.
Bill, last week I paid $2.87 for heating oil, early as of Tuesday it had gone up to $3.09 a gallon, just for the hell of it I checked the cash for oil site and it was $3.50 a gallon its like they taking advantage of the weather conditions. Next 2 weeks below normal temps, its gonna suck, I don't care about snow or how much, I know how to drive in it and the guy I gave my commercial accounts to plows me out no charge... last two small storms I shoveled it by hand as I enjoy working outside... I use a push shovel its light and fluffy snow. If I can dress warm enough, maybe I'll go and try and detect when the minus tides start. I'm not going to sit as a prisoner in a house.

I'll fly you out Tom... I'll even rent a jackhammer for you to get through the dirt, because you aren't digging, its frozen solid down almost 18 inches... even our wet and dry sand freezes... your wimpy little scoop won't handle that.

Don't feel bad brother, I wound up on my behind a zillion times when I was in the military and lived in Alaska. Problem was there was ice on the sidewalks, but was covered by snow, so you'd think the snow would give you traction. But nah, foot hits that underlying ice and down you go. My barracks was just about a block from the base bowling alley. I could see it from my barracks, and it was literally "right there". But during the winter, it would take me about 45 minutes to make that 1 block walk, as I had to plant my foot, make sure it didn't slip, then move forward, take another step, plant my foot, etc. By the time I got inside the bowling alley, my moustache and hair were frozen, so when I thawed out, my head was totally wet, lol.

Back then, since we were all young guys with mischievous behavior tendencies, we got some stencil material from our trailer maintenance shop, drew outlines of snakes, then cut them out. In Alaska, when you fall down from snow/ice, it's called getting bit by a "snow snake". So, when we saw someone fall, we'd go over to the spot where they fell with the stencil and can of spray paint and spray painted a snake over the snow/ice where they slipped. That would alert everyone else that the spot was slippery and someone already went down there, lol.

Yeah, depending on storm path 2-20”. Plow is on the ATV, food in the fridge and wood/coal for the stove so we’re good.

My once a week, get out no matter the conditions, New Years resolution is still on...out twice now
Still have a few days I can get wet.. watching Saturday.. Snow coming.. :snowing:? Just 10 inches..?
Sure sucks, I may have to resort to doing a few mile walk in my drysuit around the neighborhood.
Dragging my detector cart loaded to simulate.. then come home and watch a few of my gold finding videos
on the new big screen......for peace of mind...

I'm not concerned about the predicted snow for our area as I'm a Yankee transplant from NY and just laugh it off.

What does concern me is the 1.25 inches of ice they are predicting.
After living through over a week long nightmare without power or water after Helene, I'm not looking forward to this ice storm and dealing with the crap again. Especially with night temps in the teens.

We all take it for granted to be able to simply push a flapper handle to flush the crapper. 💩
Until you can't. :frustrated:
