UV Lights and Fluorescent Minerals - a fun side hobby to metal detecting !

I'm learning from reading these posts. I go to flea markets regularly but don't always know what to look for.
Rattlehead, KT has enjoyed going to flea markets for years, and sometimes KT just looks around with nothing particular in mind. But it does become a more interesting hunt if you like to collect something....at one time it was silver half dollars until the price got out of control. KT at one time was interested in carnival glass, the older pieces and still enjoys looking at it when He comes across it. It is kinda like going to a pawn shop to see all the stuff they have and learn what it sells for. KT has bought a few used rifles and shotguns at pawn shops. Anyway, if you have any certain things that interest you or a hobby that can be advanced by looking around at flea markets, it is worth the time looking around. Presently KT is interested in finding more radioactive ceramics and had a little success at it so far! Best of luck to you!

I haven't read the entire thread, but do find your hobbies interesting. I not too long ago learned about UV fluorescing glassware, and realized we already had some in the china hutch! Now I always carry a small 1aaa 365nm and check thrift stores for more.

Do you have a leaded glass hutch for the uranium pieces? That 1065 reading is in the "get out of there" range, but not quite "call the gov't" range, lol. I'm sure the lady at the desk keeping it for you would not be amused to know what she was holding!

I bet that mug does keep the coffee "hot" though!

Thanks for your comments, TorqueMaster! KT has a fair number of Vaseline glass (U glass) items, 7 or 8, and all are on the edge of having any significant radiation, tho they do fluoresce nicely. A few entries above find some notes about Czech Republic Vaseline glass beads and see what they register and how brightly green they fluoresce!

Just because I hold the counter essentially on the ceramic object and get a high reading does not mean it is dangerous. Remember, if that reading is 1000 at 1/4 inch, when I move to 1/2" away, it will be 250, and if I move to 1" away, it will be below 80 CPM So 2" away, it will be well below 50, which is considered in normal background. The tested normal background in my basement is 17 CPM, even if it was 40 that is nothing to be concerned about. And of the 3 principle types of radiation, alpha is so weak it is stopped by a piece of paper or even plastic wrap. Low energy beta is stopped by your skin, it is only high energy beta and gamma radiation that is high enough energy to penetrate your body, but if one is a foot away, it has little danger. This is why owning a naturally radioactive rock is not regulated by the Federal Government, nor is any of that Vaseline glass or the radioactive pottery. They just suggest you not eat or drink from any of the glassware or ceramic pieces or inhale any dust from radioactive mineral specimens.

Say you cut some fresh tomatoes and put the slices on one of those pieces, because tomatoes are an acid food, they can leach the surface of the glassware or the ceramic cup, and you then ingest it. Ingesting anything radioactive, is dangerous, because it will chemically bond with the phosphate in your bones and then it stays there, just like lead does.

But KT bought these objects to collect them, HA HA, not to use them to serve food. Their only use will be when He gives talks to groups about radioactivity. These days many people get scared about radioactivity, and they never learn we live in a radioactive environment our entire life, I like to call it radioactive soup! When KT turns on a geiger counter in a closed room, cosmic rays, which are super high energy particles, will make it tick. KT has actually had people act like it was a terrible thing! It is part of nature, understanding it is much better than being scared of it! Most of the people KT talks to in mineral clubs and such have some basic understanding of radiation, and hope they never get over exposed. Basically the only way to do that nowadays is to go to nuclear test sites, which the US Government restricts access to, to be around a melt down of a nuclear reactor, or to live on top of some radon gas emitting soil or spring and have poor ventilation of your home!

And your comment about the sales lady HA HA ...She wanted me to check her with my geiger counter, as she had a test a couple of days before called a PET scan. As a cancer test, a nurse injects you with a radioactive sugar solution after you fast for at least 12 hours. Then they have you sit quietly for 1 hour, so any cancer cells will take up the sugar, then they run a whole body scan that sees the concentrations of the radioactive sugar in your cells. Since cancer cells grow very rapidly and need lots of sugar to grow, they show up on the scan as light colored spots against a black background. KT had several of those scans during cancer treatments, and annually for the first 5 years after being cured. Fortunately, the half life of that radioactive isotope is only a couple of hours, so when I checked her, she gave no hot reading! I did have an instance when I worked that a gentleman came in and wanted to know if we had a geiger counter. Because I kept it in my office they called me down to deal with him. He told me he had prostate cancer and the VA had implanted some radioactive seeds in him, and he wanted to confirm he was hot! Seems that the VA had also accidentally implanted some non-radioactive seeds in a couple of guys and he wanted to know if he had the real deal. He did. I warned him not to let his grandchildren or great grands sit on his lap until the seeds were removed. He seemed very happy when he left! HA HA

These specimens arrived today!

The Zircon crystal cluster is what KT ordered and He got an added gift with it.

Both specimens are from the Cretaceous age Chilwa Alkaline Province, Mount Malosa, Zomba Massif, Southern Region, Malawi.

The first specimen consists of a cluster of Zircon crystals, and the first picture shows them in natural light. The second photo shows their radioactive response in CPM, about 2.5 times the background radiation in KT's Royal Dungeon. The third picture shows their response to LW 365nm. The fourth picture shows the response to MW 310nm, and the fifth picture shows the response to SW 254nm.

The second specimen consists of Microcline, Aegirine, and a well defined Zircon crystal at the bottom of the image. The sixth picture was taken in natural light. The seventh picture in LW 365nm. The 8th picture in MW 310nm, and the ninth (last image) in SW 254nm. Microcline is varying shades of pink throughout the UV band. At the base of the first image is a single tan Zircon crystal. It is various shades of orange throughout the UV band. To KT's surprise, there are also some micro crystals of zircon near the middle of the image that display well both LW and MW UV, a tiny cluster. The Aegirine does not fluoresce.

As a matter of explanation for the radioactivity of Zircon: From this locality, Zircon can have as much as 8,000 ppm ThO2 and high UO2 concentrations. These crystals are are obviously metamict, because fresh crystals are distinctly red when unaltered by radiation. Th & U will substitute for Zr in the formula ZrSiO4. Typical red zircons fluoresce a bright yellow.

In reference to your question about a lead glass lined hutch, you need solid lead, several inches of it to block high energy beta and gamma rays, so leaded glass is going to do little. Remember what I said, do not eat off of it and distance away from it of a couple of feet puts you in the safe background zone. Nothing really scary about it. Remember the counts per minute reading tells you nothing about the the specific radiation type. Geiger counters do not read alpha rays as they are blocked by the wall of the tube, low energy beta is blocked by your skin, high energy beta and gamma rays are not significantly dangerous unless you ingest the radiation source, because the you cannot distance yourself from the source.
 
Well, KT got to go out on the prowl again today!

So this Saturday morning, KT was back by the Olde Towne Flea Market, and finished His examination of the entire store.

KT had a surprise when He arrived as two young ladies, estimated to be in their mid-20s arrived at the same time as His Majesty at the door! We all entered essentially together, and KT immediately went to the FiestaWare display that He had looked at before, but the two young women were both right on my Royal Heels. Since His Majesty had searched that entire display with the Royal geiger counter, KT turned around and found a display of Riviera plates opposite that FiestaWare rack. The two youngsters were pulling out many plates and other pieces and looking at them, talking as they looked. KT realized they were going to buy some FiestaWare so I spoke to them and they were quite talkative to this olde King! HA HA Anyway, it seems that their grandmother collected FiestaWare and when she passed, they split the family collection. So I mentioned to them there was both old and newer FiestaWare and told them that last weekend KT had examined all that rack with the geiger counter, which KT showed them, and it was all newer and safe to use. They continued with their discussion and pulling items!

Then KT turned His Royal attention to the two shelves that had the Riviera plates on them and I was happy to get a strong reading off of a dinner plate and a salad plate, both with orange glaze. KT showed the ladies that and said this kind of thing is great for display and education, but should not be used to serve food. Having done my small Royal bit for education, KT realized there was still about 95 % of the flea market to examine. So He took His two finds to the front desk and had the same lady hold them, while His Majesty walked around the rest of the premises. Had the geiger counter on the entire time and the max reading of everything else checked was around 15 ppm, their store background. When KT finally showed back up at the checkout stand, the two ladies were getting ready to pay for their finds, some 15 pieces of FiestaWare and one milk white teapot! I overheard their conversation. The lady who paid for everything said she had some 1500 pieces of a collectable china brand, and was still looking for more, but that she had decided to put together a small collection of FiestaWare to compliment her grandmother’s collection! Now that is a dedicated collector. KT suggested she needed a few china cabinets in her home to display it all, and she stated that she already has several cabinets filled with her collections! HA HA Some day she will be that little old granny who has the grand daughters clamoring over her collection!

Anyway,KT paid for my two finds and headed to eat seafood at Eat My Catfish, one of His Majesty's favorite cafes in Benton, then returned home. Needless to say, KT is very happy with these two radioactive finds!

Information on the pictures: First picture shows the two plates with a scale across them for size. The salad plate is 6.3” across and the dinner plate is 8.6” across, converted from the mm scale. The second picture shows the RX-1 geiger counter reading of ~3 mR/hr for the dinner plate. The third picture shows the GMC-300S geiger counter reading 3252 CPM. That is a pretty hot plate!

The fourth picture shows the smaller salad plate reading ~2.7 mR/hr. The fifth picture shows the salad plate giving a reading of 2616 CPM. The sixth and final picture shows the two plates displaying fluorescence in SW 254nm UV light.

KT, I saw the Czech beads and am impressed with their brightness. Might make a nice add to my cabinet -- do you have a preferred source for good ones that don't break the bank? I found an etsy seller who has had 4" czech ug orbs -- I'm resisting temptation to splurge...so far...

KT was also impressed by them! Search around on eBay for 14mm Czech Vaseline Glass beads. KT got 10 of them for what He considered a reasonable price! Check to see that they are flame polished in the dealer's description.

Yep, ambient levels, that is what is basically background. If a room is really hot radioactively speaking, it is likely Radon gas, and that is definitely not good! HA HA Yes, TV has corrupted many a person's thinking, including KT at times! So when KT actually researches a topic, He is often surprised at what is true, and not hearsay. Truth spoken without bias is difficult to find and recognize this day and time.

Remember a few years back when people started building super insulated homes and basements. In some areas of the country, where the basements were dug into black shale, the government wanted you to buy a radon detection kit and install it in the basement. Expose for so many days and then send it off and they would give you the test results. If there was a problem, since radon is a gas, the solution was to install a small vent fan in the basement to remove the gas to keep it from building up, just venting it to the outside for it to disperse. We don't hear much about that anymore.

This radioactive specimen arrived today!

This specimen consists of Uraninite (UO2) aka Pitchblende when massive, and is from one of the 18 mines and prospects on Holiday Mesa of the Red Canyon Mining District, SW San Juan County, Utah. This specimen weighs ~18.5 grams. Uraninite is not fluorescent, but its secondary alteration products can be. Subsequently, KT checked it with all three of His UV wavelength lamps and no response was seen, so He assumes this example contains relatively pure Uraninite with essentially no secondary alteration.

The Red Canyon Mining District is remarkable mineralogically speaking, because it is the type locality for 43 new mineral species to science!

The seller guaranteed that this specimen would be radioactively hot. Picture 1 shows the specimen in natural light. Picture 2 shows the RX-1 geiger counter reading. Picture 3 shows the GMC-300S geiger counter reading. These are about the hottest readings I have recorded so far for such a small natural specimen!

KT recently purchased a lead lined film bag that is supposed to stop X-rays from damaging 35 mm film when going through the airport X-ray machine. The last two pictures show the reactivity of the specimen inside the bag, basically how well the lead liner is blocking the beta and gamma radiation given off by the specimen. Just a short experiment just to see how well the bag works. It does seem to block about 50% of the radiation given off. KT assumes all the alpha, most of the beta, and a little of the gamma.

KT admits the specimen looks rather unremarkable, but the geiger counters say something quite different! His Majesty is keeping this specimen in a sealed zip lock bag, marked with a radioactive symbol and label.

KT finally remembered the brand of pottery that the young lady said she had so much of....Camark Pottery. Originated in Camden Arkansas in the early 1920s, so just like the FiestaWare, the glazes had some UO2 in them from the 1920s-1940s. The Olde KingTotsalot's brain just takes a bit of time for the synapes to hook up! LOL
 
A little far afield from any discussion of fluorescence, but......

Potassium Chloride (Morton No Salt Substitute) is weakly radioactive, due to the fact it contains ~0.012% of K40 isotope. The half life of which is 1.25 billion years! Making it a weak, but long lasting radioisotope with a long steady decay rate. About 90% of the detectable radiation is beta, and the ejection of that electron converts the K40 to stable Ca40. This Morton product is often used in college chemistry and physics courses to explain radioactivity. KCl is also a constituent of water softeners.

The radiation is too weak to cause biological harm in consumer quantities. An average 154 pound adult human body contains about 140 grams of total K, but only 0.012% is K40. K40 is the largest single source of natural internal radiation for humans. As an annual dose, we get about 0.2 mSv/yr. Medical imaging is much higher than that from X-rays to Pet Scans. A Pet scan is about 22.7mSv or 113 years of normal internal dosage from K40. Fortunately the half life of the radioactive isotope attached to glucose is so short it is undetectable after 48 hours!

KT bought this container of Morton Salt Substitute at His local grocery store and it contains 3.125 oz or 88.6 grams of potassium chloride. Potassium makes up 52.44% of that weight or 46.46 grams, of which K40 makes up about 0.558 grams contained within this example.

First photograph is the full container, second photograph is the potassium chloride in a petri dish, third photo is in LW 365nm light, and the fourth picture is the reading of the Royal GMC-300S geiger counter after 1 minute of exposure. Note the reading is 22 CPM. The back ground radiation of the Royal dungeon (basement) is 18 CPM. Not much of a rise, but about 19% higher than background. Remembering that beta radiation is easily blocked by the plastic container, the radiation is of no organic significance. When used in seasoning instead of salt, it also had no significance. This near the relevant detection limits of this particular geiger counter.

This specimen arrived in the Royal mailbox today!

This miniature specimen consists of a brown crust of zircon surrounded by blebs of black magnetite, all in an ironstone matrix of weathered carbonatite from the Mud Tank Zircon Field, Alcoota Station, Alice Springs, Strangways Range, Northern Territory, Australia. KT suggests for those wanting to learn more about this location, use your search engine and enter Zircon, Mud Tank Zircon Field, Australia videos. There are several videos on YouTube showing folks collecting the gemstone material at this site.

This location is a very popular public “fossiking” (rockhounding) site in Australia. The zircon is found as both crusts on the matrix and as free floating crystals and fragments in the soil. It is found in canary yellow, white, blue, and reddish brown facet grade gemstones. This zircon has been dated at 732 million years old, placing it and the intrusion of the host Carbonatite in the Upper Pre-Cambrian. This specimen was collected in September of 2015. The zircon in this specimen is not radioactive, apparently containing little Thorium 232 substitution for Zirconium.

The first photo is in natural light, showing the brown encrusting sparkly high luster Zircon, surrounded by blebs of black opaque Magnetite. The second picture is in LW 365nm. The third picture is in MW 310mn, and the fourth picture is in SW 254nm.
