Too many choices, not enough knowledge

Hi all. I am in need of advice for a low-budget ($200-$250) setup for my immediate specific need which is not so much about searching for treasures but instead to clear my lot of construction debris. The house I just purchased is on a 1-acre lot with some history - an old house burned, was torn down, replaced, then the replacement extensively repaired/remodeled over the years. The yard was left to go wild.

Previous owners just left stuff to bury itself in the earth - nails, screws, old door hardware, bits of cars/trucks/lawn equipment (e.g., a found a wrecked motorcycle frame and a lawn mower engine with a cracked block while clearing overgrowth with a machete), that sort of thing. It's randomly everywhere as they had various sheds and animal hutches scattered on the land which were torn down long ago. There are also some power line feeds that I'd like to trace.

So I'd like to find something that doesn't cost too much, and a pinpointer to go with it, that can later be used for fun when I do (eventually) get some leisure time down the road. My budget is pretty restricted as noted above.

I found (on Amazon) that Bounty Hunter, Dr. Otek, Nokta, have models that would fit the budget (and Harbor Freight has some models I can afford) and the Garret ACE 250 is sort of there too but it's easy to get confused by all the different capabilities and features and stuff out there so I am hoping for some insight as to what brands/models within my budget might be best for the primary need.

Happy hunting!

Ace 250/300/400 are metal magnets and simple to operate. Simplex is more advanced, far more features and waterproof, more towards $300 though. Both you could possibly find used for cheaper on facebook ect. Tracking down iron scraps will quickly get tedious no matter what you use, but only 1 sure way to find out. Power lines could be easy to trace, depending on their size & depth. Large pieces of metal you can dig 1ft + and still not reach them, lots of small scraps can overload a machine, so its just a matter of how much effort you are willing to put into it.

Look on Marketplace for something used. Easy to test before you buy. May even come with accessories.

Facebook Marketplace, electronics don't usually hold their value. You should be able to find a good deal on a detector that will fit your needs.

Start with a strong magnet? Then detect afterwards?
Much of what I am looking for has sunk into the earth over time so we keep finding stuff as we clear weed and brush. Thus the desire for a detector.

I'm retired now so I have time and want to be able to till some of this for gardening. The effort will be good exercise for me.

Why would tracking iron scraps in particular be tedious? Most of the acre is overgrown grass, and the "back half" so to speak is the most overgrown and has more junk in it than the front, so I am clearing the back with a machete before trying to mow. The front half is over a greenfield so it's a bit easier to manage as it appears to be less junk-strewn.

I will check out Marketplace and Craigslist locally, thanks all!

Of the choices you listed... the Nokta model would be ideal but don't waste $200 on the entry models when you could add another $75 to $100 and pick up a entry Nokta Simplex. Or go on offer up and find a used one for about $150 - $200. The Simplex is a stellar unit for its price point.

You also couldn't go wrong with one of the Australian detectors but not one under $250. The Aussie's make really really good units. 👍

Hope that helps a little 😎
