Has anyone here spent much time around Matagorda or South Padre Island hunting? If so, please share some of your past experiences. I'm a dirt hunter, but go to Matagorda 3-4 times a year to fish. Thinking about possibly crossing over to water detecting occasionally.

If there is a beach and people, it is a place to detect. Trust you have a multifrequency type machine that can handle salt water. If not, you can keep to the dry sand and find a lot. Blanket line, foot of dunes, paths, etc., strongly recommend a long handled sand scoop. You'll be going to the beach a lot more!

DO NOT DETECT AT PADRE ISLAND. YOU WILL GO STRAIGHT TO JAIL.

I think that the South Padre National Seashore is off limits. Further south where the resort beaches aren't off limits. I'll research that one.
I've taken my detector to Matagorda 3 times, but can't pry myself away from my surf rods when the reds are running. Maybe I should go when the fishing sucks.

You can detect in Port Aransas. At Padre Island the cops don't even ask questions. Lots of good fishing down there. I'm about to start a huge remodel in Port Aransas. I will be hitting the sand. I'll be there during Spring Break.

I'll watch from my truck.
We had what was called Defex conditions while stationed in Cuba. Most of the time it was just go to a shelter and wait for it to end. This one time we had to go against Marines that were the enemy and try to infiltrate. I grew up in the country so sneaking through the woods came natural to me. I worked my way up the ridge. There on an overlook sat a Marine,I,walked up very quietly. He didn't even respond till I sat down next to him. The look on his face was worth a zillion dollars. You see we trained with the Marines prior to deploying to the Nam. So this poor soul had never dealt
with a Bee. After the initial shock, the first thing out of his mouth was "Aw s**t please don't tell the Gunny. We sat there for the longest time till the Defex condition ended where we went our separate ways. To this day I still get a smile thinking about it. Oh almost forgot. We had real weapons with blanks. I didn't touch off a round, I just said BANG!. The look he had might as well been a Nuke going off. :rofl2: Watch from your truck, but keep in mind I'll be there somewhere. HEH HEH Heh.
