I have recently decided to get back into this hobby. I purchased a Tesoro Tejon on Craigslist that seems to be working quite well. I'm wondering however, should I sell it and get something more akin to a Minelab Vanquish 440? More modern electronics and whatnot??
I am not enamored with the idea of the LCD readout because from what I can tell, you should dig just about everything regardless of the readout.

Machine will be used for coin hunting and occasional trips to the beach.

Thanks in advance.

I'm new to the hobby but am blown away at how well these modern machines work. I hear stories from old timers talking about how difficult it was back in the day and I'm over here just turning mine on, picking a mode, and finding all sorts of stuff. The VDI readout I'm finding to be of limited use though. It seems like it's only part of the puzzle when deciding what to dig.

If a newer machine gives you more ability, or quality of use benefits, I'd say get one. These things are pretty amazing when you stop and think about it.

The single frequency tesoro isn't going to work very well on salt beaches. You want an SMF detector for that. The vanquish you mentioned would be a great choice. It's not waterproof though. If you need waterproof, then check out the new vanquish line.

For hunting coins in in trashy park like sites, vdi and its associated discrimination are a godsend.

"Dig all" in a park and you'll walk out with massive amounts of junk and very few coins. Use vdi and notch discrimination, and you'll walk out with very little trash and a lot of coins.

Oh, man... I forgot to mention discrimination. I've been learning it on my machine and it'd a Godsend. You can literally cut out specific targets. Brilliant lol

Discrimination - The more you use, the more you lose.

Hi & Welcome Iburgguy.

Disc/Notch can be helpful in some situations, but will downrise your findrate; also does the visual use of the meter.
What I'm much more interested in is the question: why did you choose the Tejon?
The Tejon has something to offer to you like Groundbalance, Threshold and 2-Disc.
Yes, you're some kind of limited to wet salt beaches, but you're good to the dry sand. And depending on it's frequency you may also find the small gold. Give it a try and than decide in what your needs are. Otherwise you may regret you sold it.

my 2 pennies

Thanks all. I bought it because it was a great price on Craigslist and knew it was valuable to someone. I'm actually selling it and have ordered myself a Vanquish 540.
I started two years ago with the Vanquish 440 and love it! Easy to use and finds lots of stuff....

The Tejon was a top relic machine in the day! Good snag!
