there are exact replicas of the Legend, Equinox, Manticore and few others that sell for 75% off sticker prices. I've seen a few swinging them, not so sure I would want to take it into the water for a long period of time though. The guts inside are exactly the same.

Well, if a person is wanting to break into detecting and don't have a lot of cash, then this is one way to do it. Maybe at a later time when they have more funds they can upgrade. In my opinion, if it works, great! If not, well you're not out a thousand bucks.
