Here it is. It is exactly one inch at its longest end to end. The metal is kind of heavy, but not heavy enough to be lead - so it is not a fishing sinker. There are two holes at either end if you can't see them in the photo. I suspect it is some kind of decorative thing that may have been attached to leather or something else.

Oh yeah, I should have added that this was found in a backyard in Memphis, TN on the east side where I previously found two Civil war dropped bullets. Supposedly there was no Civil War activity anywhere near this area.

Don't forget, back then they were just bullets and those rifles were everywhere beyond the battlefield

Not sure, but because of the shape and the placement of the holes it may be a sacrificial zinc anode found on outboard motors. Mine is a fin shape but it could be from an older one. I really don't know.

Kind of looks like a cover over a key hole. Also is it possible that it can come apart? Looks a little like an edge all around it.

Thanks, but no, it's definitely solid and the edge you see is likely just a manufacturing seam.

Update on this - I just inserted a thin stiff wire into one of the holes and pushed it through the dirt all the way until it came out of the other hole. So that seems to indicate it may have been some kind of button or decoration held on with string.

...or maybe it snapped together with the other half having aligned pins. (I don't know who would want a metal avocado though.)

I found one almost EXACTLY like that last year. I'll go through my stuff tonight and see if I can find it and post a pic. I was a bit flabbergasted with mine too, trying to figure out what it was.

I found it in a field in a local park. No boats there, by the way.

I looked and couldnt find mine but I know I found one once. I wonder if they are weights used for balancing some kind of mechanism. 🤔
