I traveled to Pittsburgh for the NFL Draft this past weekend and extended the trip to get some metal detecting. After the Draft, my friend and I went to one of the oldest parks in Pittsburgh (Schenley Park). A local detectorist recommended the park but cautioned us that the park would humble us. That was an understatement! My partner found an IHP within 15 minutes. Good Sign! After that we found absolutely ZERO for the next 3 hours. I found a 1928 Wheat (finally), then it was 2 more hours of NO COINS! in the final hour I was able to sneak out a silver Rosie. Total coins found were 6.

The next day we traveled to Stuebenville OH to check out the late 1700 era town. We headed to the historical district and discovered very friendly homeowners and curbstrips that had very few targets. 1820 - 1915 homes. After 7 hours of hunting (7 home permissions) we found numerous wheats and 2 silvers each 😒. All dimes save for a silver wedding band. It was amazing that while we were pulling deep clad quarters out of the ground the silvers were just not there.

The last day in OH, we stayed in the town and went to a 1920s era block of homes. After 7 hours again, we only found 2 silvers each. All Rosie's or Mercs, my buddy did find 2 Barbers on that day.

It just didn't make any sense that we found clad at 6-8 inches but hardly any silver. Did the curbstrips get installed post 1964? Has the town been hammered for the 5 decades? Who knows.

My finds are included for the entire 2 1/2 - 3 days. 17 wheats and 6 silvers. The "Dad" .925 ring is chunky.

HH and GL All.

Good report. And yes, Washington state has seen a lot of md'ing pressure (to the obvious old-town turfed parks), in the last several decades.

Well good to see you were able to redeem yourselves after Schenely. Five or six coins from there is a good day any more. What keeps me going back is when or if you find a coin its likely to be an old one. Really itching to get back there. Congrats on the shiny and other cool finds, the Dad ring is cool. As far as the deep clad, I just figure dirt was added to the original soil. Nothing more disappointing than a sweet soft high tone that turns out to be a memorial or clad. You're well on track to a 100 FTY at the rate your going. Good luck. Wish I could have hunted with you guys. Maybe next time. How did you like Pittsburgh ?

Usually a wheat is a good find for me out of a park congrats on the coins from Schenley park and the coins from Ohio.

Thanks again for your hospitality Mark! It would have been great to get out with you on a hunt. Maybe next time I am in town. I usually try to go once a year to watch a game in the 'Burgh. I love that city.

We rarely hunt parks M40bnk, we hunted this one based on Mark's recommendation. He told us it would humble us and we always like a challenge :cool3:

Man, that was a lot of work for limited success. We could have just stayed home and had as much success. Still, nice to see another part of the country. Back to our familiar grounds.
Gale I envy you, just being to hop on a plane. Go to a strange town and start doorknocking. Just not that socialable. One thing around here, when you ask for permission, some people eye you up with distrust. Wondering what you're really up to. Sad the times we live in. Still on IR. They gave me some pills but they don't seem to work very well. My next outing will be where you found the IHP. Level ground and close to the truck. Last year I found what I think Is a civil war token there and I'm convinced there is some old silver laying in there. Hope you get on some shiny soon. Mark

But we were in PA and OH....amazing how thin the finds were Tom
Don't I know it. Ha ha. When I hit one of those parks I'm happy to come away with 5 or 6 coins. As long as they are a hundred years or older. Fresh dropped clad is almost non-existent. Good luck. Mark

Even though the sites were stingy - you were still able to pull six silvers and more than a dozen Wheaties. Not what your used to, but still a decent showing. I've had days that I'm finding wheaties and Indians at 2 - 3 inches and memorials at 6-8 inches on the same curbstrip. Somedays you just wonder. Best of luck on future hunts.
