I've been searching for quite sometime for a detecting club in my area. closest I can find is St. Louis (140 miles away). Or Paducah, Kentucky (70 miles away). If anyone knows of anything in Cape Girardeau, New Madrid, Sikeston area please let me know. If there are more folks in my area interested, lets get together and get one going.

Did you check this link?

It lists clubs by state...

The era of brick & mortar clubs has gone the way of the dinosaur. They only exist in the largest cities these days. And even then-so: With declining #'s. The reason is : The internet era (forums, blogs, FB, etc...) that began in the late 1990s and through to today.

No one gets off their duff any more to go to 1x per month meeting. Instead, if you want to show & tell, you hop on your 'puter. If you want to see pro/con discussion of tech/toys, you hop on the internet. If you want to see who's local hobbyists in your area, you go to your 'puter.

So club memberships have been declining for the past 20-ish years. The internet has replaced our "social itch". Even on Craig's link, I see a few clubs in CA that have gone defunct since the date of that post. Clubs : R.I.P.

Yeah, that's where I found the two I mentioned. Thanks for the help.

Makes sense, Its a shame though. I always enjoyed being part of a group. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find some people on here to hunt with. Thanks

.... I always enjoyed being part of a group. Oh well, I'm sure I'll find some people on here to hunt with. ....

Well, when you think of it, social media (internet forums, FB, etc...) are akin to "being part of a group". In fact, in certain ways, it's improved the "being part of a group". Because in the old days of brick & mortar clubs, you might have 30 persons in the meeting room at an md'ing club-meeting. Yet of those 30, perhaps only 2 shared your niche-interest. Eg.: A certain risk level, or the harder-core challenges of the hobby (hard-core relicky pursuits, vs tame turf or beach hunting, etc...). But now, with the internet, persons of like tastes & talents tend to find each other. And you're no longer obligated to give polite lip service, and sit in a room and hear about some topic-for-the-night that bores you to tears.

Thus we're all still part of a group, but just via 'puters now, not brick & mortar. And people *do* still get together in-the-flesh to hunt, but they do so via hookups where they meet up via shared interests. At least that's what I'm seeing in CA : You reach to someone who has your particular machine, asking for their advice. Or you see someone who's got coveted finds, and you realize he's only an hour away. Meanwhile, he sees you post a similar wickedly old coin, and he realizes you're only an hour from him. The two of you might agree to compare notes, meet up for a hunt, etc... So invariably, in this hobby, the virtual chats can turn to field-hunts and get togethers. Even if not on a club- #'s scale.
