Hello all. Other than target I'd in trashy sites what are the other benefits of a multi frequency machine over a single fre
Q. Unit?

Actually the truth is. Trashy sites multi freq can have disadvantage over single freq I.e. higher conductors mask by lower conductors. Machine though using single frequency needs to possess lower single few ops like 5 kHz approx.
Multi frequency biggest advantage is more accurate ID of target at deeper depths. Plus they do better calling nonferrous targets nonferrous targets at deeper depths (likely mid depth) in higher mineralized soil- even though the MF unit could be in error ID wise. Single freq unit here could call the same target ferrous.
One is getting part of the best worlds really using multi freq. sweeping over higher and lower conductive targets.

Keep in mind most MF detectors now sold have multiple modes. The freq used per mode can change or the frequency weighting can change.
So one cannot use a currently sold MF unit in one MF mode and necessarily be all they can be at detecting various sites, various targets of interest or various goals.

In sites with lot of iron. Say relic hunting. Single freq can have advantage and MF can have advantage per coil sweep direction over detecting scenario . Lot of detectors having MF ops do possess single freq ops sold today.

Single frequency is your friend in high trash and in higher than normal emi conditions. SMF will false a lot in iron contaminated areas.
As far as the benefits of SMF or Multi frequency goes, the ability to ID items better at depth and be used in areas where the ground has higher mineral conditions where single frequency units struggle.

Plus a lot of salt water beaches need a multi frequency units in the wet sand.

There are a ton of single frequency beach detectors too that still work good in the salt water

I do not always use Multi Frequency with my SMF machines and I still buy single frequency units.

Heck I like all of them!

Thanks for the great advice. Does one or the other give better id's in relatively clutter free areas? Thanks

Buy a popular (easy to resale) USED detector. Choose one based on the features you think you’ll like by watching YouTube videos of some of the ones suggested on the many threads here about choosing a detector. Get acquainted to detecting and if you want a different one upgrade. Seldom will anyone choose what’s best for them based on others opinions of what works for them.
