Anyone have civil war, or any other type of artillery piece, please show. I want to one day find an artillery shell but for now, I wan’t to see what y’all found.

Aye nice, Shell fragments. The one in the middle looks like possible from a riffled artillery and the first one looks smooth bore. The last 2 not a clue.

I found detecting a 1" diameter cast iron canister shot from a Revolutionary War battle that occurred in my area out on Eastern Long Island NY. Probably fired from either a three or six pounder cannon. These balls were sand cast, and it's interesting to see the quartz grains embedded. I also show it next to a KGII half pence, .75 Brown Bess, and .69 French Charlesville rounds that I detected.

My neighbor found the large cannon ball while gardening at his house on a bluff overlooking the ocean. The British and Hessians occupied our area for most of the conflict.

I found this mortar a few years ago at a 1700s site in Maine so it was probably going to be used against the British or Indians

FYI, none of these were found MD’ing, I found the one with the Bormann fuse while diving a shipwreck off Cape Fear in the 90’s.
It’s being held together with caulk and Bondo, as it fell apart as it dried out.
The other two, which I have no idea what they are, came out of privy’s in Baltimore, many years ago.

Artillery-related metal detecting finds include part of a pre-Civil War shako plume holder and an A Scoville button. I was so excited by the shako part that I eventually located a museum-quality piece and bought it.

That’s sick. I actually had to look up what a shako plume is and that’s one hell of a find.

Ooo, judging the last two by the size. Could be from a ships swivel cannon. They were usually 1 to 3 pounders.
