Seated 1842 Half Dime ..Holed!

Last week I found what would be my oldest and most valuable American silver coin.. were it not turned into a pendant at some point in time. Ugh! If that's not bad enough, I gave it a good scuff when digging it up. Anyone else found any holed silver coins? I'm curious to know if they're worth anything. I might just give this one to a buddy..

That’s a great find hole or not. I’m still looking for a half dime. It seems the older the coin the better chance it will have a hole in it. At least around here.

Yep, coins had a lot more buying power back then, so folks would often punch a hole and string ‘em together to help prevent losing them. Nice find!

Where are you located? I think that looks like shrapnel damage. It seems there’s two spots on that coin and they are kind of jagged. I think it was a lieutenant leading the charge. artillery shell explodes right in front of him and his horse. They both go to the ground mortally wounded and the coin falls from his pocket. if I were you, I would donate it to an old age stable for horses. unless you think there is another plausible answer. I kind of don’t think so. I think that’s it.

The coin looks great. The hole looks like an accident or stabbed with a knife point.

A big congrats on the half-dime! I'd longed to dig a Seated half-dime for many years until I finally did it just about a year ago. It was definitely a monkey off my back. I still have a lot of bucket listers to go though.
