I was thinking of changing my 12" coil to the Equinox 11" round coil hearing it does better in we and black sand and in shallow salt water. Has anyone used this coil on the Elite and is it worth the extra $225.00+ cost? I do well with the 12" but it is a bit unstable in the wet/black sand. I have learned how to read it ok but would like a coil with better stability.

I didn’t see your OP or I would have tried to dissuade you from getting so deep, money wise, into your Elite.

The Elite is good entry level machine, but for a few dollars more than you are now into your Elite you could have bought an Equinox 800 bundle that comes with an 11” coil, 6” coil, ML80 headphones and a bunch of tchotchkes for…

$799

…and an 800 will run circles around an Elite. Now that the 800 is out of production these 800 bundles might be the most higher end equipment for your money available right now.

I just picked the first ad in my internet search as an example. You could likely make a few phone calls and get even a better deal without the tchotchkes you probably don’t want or need.

How about the Nox 900? Is it better than the Elite on the beach
I haven't used those two Detectors on the beach, so I can't give you a fair comparison. The Manticore, however, is like I said above. It is extremely hard to take it out of my hand to use a lesser detector when the Manticore is so good and stable.

For $600 the elite came in a package with a 12 and 8 inch coil. Don’t let anyone tell you there’s a “better” machine. There’s more complicated machines. But you have to ask yourself, do you want to play with gadgets or find treasure? And even the extra gadgets I watch the guys sat and Sunday mornings, they’re still guessing and being surprised some of the time. You’re talking “wet black sand” so I’m reading (beach hunting), where in most cases you’re not in the junk yard environment land lubbers endure. So what about the real world? I hunted beside a guy for two weeks, with his Manticore which he’d had for over a year, and despite having just purchased my machine, out hunted him every day except one. There’s one beach area I hunt where there used to be moorings so there’s chains and bolts and steel junk. I put the 8” coil on and in 15 minutes found an old silver chunky ring, then a 7 g 14k, then a SS class ring I’m trying to return. I’ll put the elite against anything, and I’m still learning its capabilities.

Lol. Bury a target in your sand at 12” and watch your Elite whiff on it while a 2018 tech Equinox bangs on it. Then bury it at 14” and watch your Elite whiff on it and your buddy’s Manticore smash it.

The Elite isn’t even a good value against the Triple Score, which is its direct performance competition. Same performance, $100 less.

Also, your post reeks of a novice detectorist.

I do like my Elite. I purchased the 11" coil and it is OK. It is better moving around the junk and I find quite a lot of smaller jewelry with it than with the 12x9 coil. But I do like the machine and I have been on the beach with someone with a manticore and I found quite a bit more than he did plus a gold wedding band. Pure luck? Probably, but it didn't out preform me that day. I am interested in upgrading to the manticore now. just for the little extra power and the extra features like the 2D screen. But For someone to knock down the Elite has never used one or never gave it a chance. I trust this machine on the beach entirely! I have learned this detector hands down and know what it's telling me and I think that's the ticket with any machine. Yes there are much better machines but if you don't understand or learn that unit the best machine is worthless. I will get the Manticore for sure but will not get rid of my Elite!

I am going to upgrade to the Manticore like I stated in one response. I am certain it will be much better after learning it as well as I have learned the Elite. But I will never talk bad about the Elite. For the money, it has kept up with the big boys and I can say that first hand. I have a jar of gold and silver rings along with silver and gold earrings and lots of coins. So no complaints on the Elite at all. It has paid for itself 10 times already. When you can read past the slight instability and false signals at times in the wet sand you got it made. I will enjoy the more stable Manticore for sure.

Dont they have issues with leaking? I have read where many have had issues with the 800 beach hunting

Yes, the early 800/600 did. I have later one with hundreds of wading hours on it, and that I still wade with occasionally, and it has never leaked. That said, I wouldn’t dive with it. The 900/700 and Manticore have had minimal leaking issues, as well as the Elite, that I’m aware of. Not much info on the new Vanquish yet. You can ask Big Boy, a retailer will have a better finger on the pulse of the frequency of any leaking issues currently across all manufacturers. It seems like Minelab, Nokta and XP are currently all doing a good job with their machines. I was really hoping that the Legend 2 was going to be a 30’ machine, but it just ended up being another 16 footer.

Even in its ripe old age, the 800 is an excellent performer. And an argument could be made that the current price of an 800 “pro pack”, that comes with two coils and BT headphones, is the best deal right now for most detecting conditions.

100% agree! The Minelab Elite is a great machine for the $.
The problem is the extra $100 above the Triple Score. Unless you’re manufacturer loyal, for whatever reason, the Elite is not a good buy.

The new Vanquish pro pack is priced the same as a Triple Score pro pack and is a step down from the Elite.

For a mid level detector, the best value is still the Triple Score Pro Pack.

“Novice detectorist”. Odd. Several treasure magazines paid me money to buy articles I wrote, over 20 of them, probably before you ever saw a detector. That’s your argument? Depth range? 😂. Yea boy that’s what I wanna do, spend all day digging 14” for nickels and canslaw. Who’s the novice? I paid the DP on the house I’m in (value over 900k now) by cashing in my gold and silver finds. And “my buddies manticore “ ? Firstly he’s not my buddy. And if his manticore “smashed on” those 14” targets where are they? Sorry if I bruised your ego, but I’ll give you an open invitation. Any time you want to bring your manticore up to Nantasket beach (all 3 miles of it) and prove your theory against me, I’m happy to oblige. And before you start making excuses please reread my reply to the original post where I affirmed we’re talking about beach hunting. Two Saturdays ago I watched yet another manticore owner leave the beach frustrated. As Willie Mascone said “give me a straight broom stick and I’ll run the table, and sweep the floor afterwards.” Please, come educate me. Open offer to anyone.
