I dug this yesterday in a field with an old homesite, the structure itself being long gone. The other finds ranged from mid-1800s relics, to 1940s (and earlier) coins, to modern trash. This is a first for me, and it made my day to unearth such a cool piece of history.

The soil was extremely challenging, and I really struggled throughout the day with falsing on the Manticore. I ran in All-Terrain General, ground balanced often, toggled recovery between 4-6, sensitivity between 18-22 and stabilizer between 3-6. Nearly every swing had false signals, even when swinging very slow. The iron grunting was pretty much constant. I cleaned under the coil (M9) and made sure my coil wire was snugly wound — nothing loose flopping around. Nothing I tried seemed to help with the false signals. My guess is that it’s just very, very tough ground, but I certainly welcome any advice.

Undoubtedly, it's part of a military buckle. Perhaps the missing part is nearby. Congratulations on the find!👍

Thanks guys. It is half of what I believe to be a Virginia-style 2-piece confederate tongue and wreath buckle (photo below). I am definitely going to return to the location and hunt for the other half.

Very nice.
I don’t have a manticore I us a 900
When I’m in heavy iron I turn the recovery speed way up. It kills depth but if your in a lot of nail you aren’t going up get much depth anyway. Good luck on your return.
