My hunting buddy and I were detecting this Indian village site known to have been there for most of the 1600's and often visited by Jesuits who lived there for months or even years at a time between 1647 and about 1660.
My friend more excited than I've ever seen him says he found a Jesuit ring. I run over to look at it. 10 seconds later, he finds a second Jesuit ring. I start hunting in that area and less than 10 feet from the Jesuit finds I find first one, then two, then 3 Crotal bells. The Jesuits were known to have these bells to give to the Indians who were fascinated by them.
So I would guess my bells are in the 1647 to 1660 range.
My friend then finds in this same area a rather strange looking spoon. The printing on it says Double Winton which means tinned and the Maker's Mark was R then pic of a spoon then an S. This mark was between 1650 and 1700.
Needless to say, we will be going back again. About 200 acres to be hunted.
Oh, and I found a musket ball, unfired and he found 8 musket balls, all fired.

Hopefully more to come

We'll be going back as long as we're welcome by the owners of this property.
There are no bottle caps or pull tabs at all, so this time I'm digging almost everything until my body can't take it anymore. My hunting buddy did a test bed in his yard on the Jesuit rings. He buried them 8 inches and they began to sound off as ferrous like junk even though they are brass.
Hopefully I'll get a ring or two and post pics.

Yeah, you certainly are right, location is everything and if it hasn't been hit, it can be a gold mine. The owners of the property told us that back in the 1920's a team of archeologists hit the area pretty hard. No detectors back then but digging and sifting can sure unearth lots of things......but NOT everything.

Pics of the Jesuit rings forthcoming

Wow that's great. Share pictures of your buddies rings.

Yeah, I'll get pics of the rings. They were pretty dirty after being in the ground for 350 years but the details of the face of the rings was still there.
He has them "mildly" cleaned by now I'm sure.

You are correct. According to the history of this area that I've read and studied up on, these Jesuits were literally the first white people to come to this particular area of my state and also the first white people to live in and around the Indians of this area..
