old white's beachcomer 60 not working right

Hi all, Ben here, nice to meet you.

So I took it apart, looks clean and tidy inside, I even managed to unstick the coil, also clean dry and tidy looking.

Basically, it turns on, you get a fixed tone which is quite loud, then press the trigger button on the shaft and it goes quiet. turning up the sens brings back the buzz tone, disc/gbn does nothing really.

Big issue is it can pick up a fridge, but coins etc barely come through at all. like maybe at under an inch from the coil.

Thoughts?

I take it this question was too technical or something? It'd be nice to know if I can narrow it down to just a coil problem. Thank you

I can't help with that detector but as rebel said it may be time for a new detector (money wise) unless you really like it. One of the Score or new vanquish model may not run much more than repairs or parts. Plus headphones but you could get a warranty and other pros. There is a repair shop that works on older detectors but I can't remember the name but again shipping plus repairs/parts.... Good luck.

just sold two fishers and got a c.scope, new model. Think I've been through every brand except minelab over about 36yrs now.
I got two whites very cheaply, and this one would be great except for this weird issue it has.

I've heard of similar problems with this and other brands...

The Beachcomber is a mid-70s TR detector, so 50 yrs old now. Most likely the coil has gone bad. You might be able to split it open and rebuild, but you need to know what you are doing to be successful.
