Old key

Is it possible to determine what this went too? Found it in south AL on an old homesite dating back to the 1800’s. Roughly 6inches deep. I also found an old 3 link chain about 5 yards from this key. Key is around 2 inches long. Still new to metal detecting but I am absolutely addicted to it my family has started detecting with me as well! How do y’all ID your finds and/or get more info on them? Certain websites maybe or is it all just experience? Thanks in advance for the help!

That is properly called a Casket key. It would have gone to the lock on a small chest or cabinet. Very nice find.

Cool key. It’s a fun hobby. When I first started I was amazed that there was so much history under our feet. Keep swinging and good luck.

Good thing it was not found on oak island. It would have been a possible clue to buried treasure chest some where on the island.

That's what is so cool about this hobby. You never know what artifacts you will unearth. Half the fun is trying to figure out both what the item is, who might have owned it, and what it was used for. Love this stuff.
