Of course the day I forgot my gloves, I needed them.

Was searching at a local track I've had good luck at. Realized I forgot my gloves, but didn't feel like going back for them.

While digging one signal, I reached in the hole and pulled out a piece of broken glass. Didn't cut myself, thankfully. Kept digging, found more broken glass and a piece of wire (source of the high signal).

Little later, dug up some small electronic device that was broken. Still not sure what it was, but it had a USB C charging port, a switch, and a mic (bluetooth adapter?) and a leaking rechargeable battery. I didn't realize it was leaking until I noticed wet spots in the dirt on my hand. I wiped my hands off on the wet grass, called it a day, went home, and washed my hands real good.

I think I'm going to keep another set of gloves in my truck just in case.

Admittedly, I don't wear gloves while out detecting on the beach. In so many other facets of work, I'm a big believer. I still have a few pair of my old structural firefighting gloves laying around and I find myself using them a lot! My hands seem to take a real beating doing so many tasks.

I like the Milwaukee Red Nitrile Level 1 Cut Resistant gloves. $5-6, resist cuts from most things you are going to run into, and I like them because you can buy them "smaller" than you might normally, so they fit nice and tight and give you good dexterity. No slop on the fingertips so hitting buttons on the detector is precise, and yet you can still dig with your fingers in the hole and not worry about cuts from rocks and debris. Edges on a beer can that has been shredded by a lawnmower are like a razor.

Always wear them - especially with all the can slaw and other rusty crap you usually come across. Get mine at the what used to be the dollar store. Thick and last a long time.

I hate wearing gloves, even though I know it's a very good idea.

On one permission , I picked up a skin infection on my hands within a couple of days of hunting it. The first time it happened, I didn't make the connection, it was only the second time it happened the penny dropped.
These infections were not a result of an obvious cut or scratch, but seemed to be simply from contact with something nasty in the soil...

Luckily, a course of antibiotics cleared the infections in both instances, and I wear gloves far more frequently these days...

That is a bummer but good you learned a lesson. I know I've forgot things over the years and Now I Never forget a second time around. Things forgot.... Gloves, finds pouch, hat, sunscreen. And things I have extra of each....... in the car or boat.
