One other time, found 2 wheats from the 50’s on that trip.
Through research that I did, it was a gather spot on the Chesapeake started in the 20’s and by the early 50’s, it was houses.

I dug dozens of 30’s-50’s bathing suit buckles last year and they were all brass. What you found could be one but the pic is too fuzzy to really see.

Looks like you may be onto something there JB. Somebody around 1926, maybe a bit later, dropped that penny into the water, same with the 1950's Wheaties. So, looks like people from that timeframe were definitely in the water there. Plus, you got a fishing sinker, proof that heavies are in the area as well.

And IIRC, I think Joe/OBN always says that when hunting a new potential spot, look for old coins first. That helps date the area and proves people were there back then. I think now it's a case of going back to the same area, cranking sensitivity up as high as you can, the start working slowly and listen for faint whisper signals or nulls, i.e., possible deeper targets. How deep were the pennies and sinker?

It wasent a large beach, but I think it has potential, might have to wait till the seagrass dies off, it’s getting thick in areas.
I’d say the coins were about 8-10” down.

Yep, bathsuit buckle.. A real good sign of activity. Things have been slow here also, last three hunts only silver. Got one of those brass things too.

Sea Grass is coming on early this year, normally by mid July its kicking in.. I've not seen any yet for I'm hunting the open bay beaches, up the rivers I bet its taking over. Good Luck!!

Hey JB, doing good. I haven't been down to our beaches since the 3-night trip wife and I took a couple months ago. Damn, I REALLY miss our beach house. It's hard on the wife just taking a day trip, it's a very LONG day/night for her, plus what do we do with our dog during the season, as they're not allowed back on the beach until after Labor Day. She much prefers staying at a pet friendly place for a few days, as do I, but during the season, pet friendly hotels that we stayed at that cost $70 or $80 per night offseason, along with a daily pet fee, are suddenly $300 or more per night during the season, along with the daily pet fee on top of that. So, I would feel intense pressure/stress to find some cheddar & bling to offset the higher cost. And I don't like to be stressed when I hunt so what to do?

I have no problem going down for the day to hunt, made that drive hundreds of times over the years, but while it can be hit or miss during the offseason, during the season should be more potential targets/recent drops as depositors fill the beaches every day, so a day trip during season could work out well. I need to stop at the Coast Guard station to get my annual State Park parking pass anyway, and there's another beach I've done well at in the past that I really want to hit with my PI. The last time I went down for the day, I went solo, wanted to get some hours on my Dual Field PI. I'll do that but I'd much prefer to have a buddy or two go with me, make it a group trip. 3 hours down, 3 hours back, and several hours detecting by myself is a bit lonely & boring than if I had a buddy hunting with me. But I'll do a solo trip if I have to, even if it's just to keep dust from building up on my Pirate hat, lol.

Well, let's see, pennies are light, so if pennies were 8"-10" deep, that tells me that gold and/or other heavies would be even deeper, so you would need to really concentrate, work slowly paying attention to overlapping sweeps as much as possible, and listen for those whisper signals or nulls depending on how your detector functions. Nulls on my Sovereign indicate iron when I'm in discrim mode, which has auto iron rejection. But nulls on my Dual Field can signify very deep targets, just at the edge of max depth or possibly deep coins on edge, but there might not be a strong enough signal to trip the audio, so detector just might null. And on one trip, when I found a coin line in the wet, I did get a couple of nulls. Truthfully, nulls can mess with yer mind, as you wonder if you heard a null, is there something really there? But only way to find out fer sure is to dig, and both times I got a null, I dug and found deep coins waiting for me, lol.

I wouldn't be worried about seagrass if you were up at the Potomac River. I'd be much more concerned and worried about all the chit that's flowing downstream towards the Bay. MASSIVE Code Brown alert for the Potomac River, lol.

My stepson has an 11-acre farmette up in northern Harford County, house was built in 1900. Before switching to beach hunting 15 years ago, I was a coinshooter/land hunter, and hunting old houses was my jam. I never hunted an old house and got skunked, I always found old coins, silver, IHP's, Wheaties, old iron kid's toys, even found an old gold woman's ring, probably wedding band, in one backyard. Covered with dirt, I initially thought it was a pipe coupler that a plumber would use, but once I cleaned it up, it was gold, band was just wide for its size.

I have his OK to go up there anytime, but when it comes to permissions, even family, I always prefer to hunt after a good rain, helps with depth and helps keep any plugs I dig from dying, which can happen if the ground is really dry. But the next 2 weeks is supposed to be dreadfully hot, so I'll wait until that hot spell passes before heading up.
