New Article - Ground Balancing the Minelab Manticore: Is It Really Necessary? - Written by Dennis Wynne

I always do a ground balance and noise cancel at the start of a session and regularly through out the day, it takes seconds and doesn't do any harm, so why not?

The article repeats a statement from Minelab that ground balance is not required, but I believe that is taken out of context and if you read the manual fully, the steer is to use it when you feel it is necessary, they even have a section on what the ground noise trace looks like.

The article fails to mention the difference between auto and manual ground balance (auto is perfered). It also also fails to mention that there is no way of determining the degree of soil mineralisation with the manticore (another reason to always to do a ground balance) Note the number achieved after doing an auto ground balance is not a measure of the degree of mineralisation.

With small low conductors, the target trace can be dragged down (and up) by the ground signal, I've seen the trace return to the centre line after a ground balance so I'm convinced it is a must do.

A lot of inexperienced detectorists like to think ground balancing is not required because they don't know how to do it, but I would say if you want to get the best out of your machine learn how to do it and do it regularly! Making it one of your hot keys options is a good idea.😁
 
I've never ground balanced my Manticore. I always ground balanced my White's Spectra V3i. I must have over 100 hours on the Manticore and over six years detecting total. I will hit hot colonial foundations through all seasons, weather conditions, and angles. Away from EMI sources in the forest with well-drained sandy soils, I typically run my sens at 28. It's stable and quiet.

Coming from a explorer 2 CTX NOX 800 and deus 2 . I never ground balancing was a waist of time in my soil These machines would auto ground balance or be run at 0 .
First off I hunt trashy ground try and ( find a spot with no metal ) If I ground balance and move a few feet the ground balance is wrong .
Find a clean spot lol which it says . By running the CTX in auto ground balance it continually changes the ground balance to the ground .
It's not only the ground signal but rusted bottle caps and nails long rusted away leaving ferrous oxide in the ground so what happens when you hit a spot with caps and nails long rusted away .
Your going to have to rebalance every time or you won't be balanced this is why I use auto or 0 .
Generally speaking my ground is mild to moderate ( except when I hit a rusted away piece of iron )
Look at it this way you have a field that has mild dirt you ground balance everything is great till you hit that ferrous oxide patch from long rusted away iron . Park environment is filled with crap no way of holding a proper ground balance this is where auto balance is king changing as the ground changes . I do noise cancel often but ground balance no I would ground balance in mineral ground which would be consistent compared to mild ground with hot spots everywhere .
In mineral ground the iron oxide from rusted nails and caps become similar to the ground signal which to me makes the ground more consistent compared to mild soil with hot spots .
