thought it would be fun to post some pics of somthing you can ID to see if others know what it is..maybe give a clue to what it is.
heres somthing pretty simple.

Definitely the center to an old oil lamp....My wife and I own a 225 year old house and I have a collection of them. The one you found seems like a rather nice example. I have restored a couple and brought them back to usable condition of course you have to find or make a base but the glass flues are cheap enough and they make for a great piece of elemental antiquity when you're done...

Great idea with the "What is it game" I'm sure we all find things that could provide entertainment...

its not a wine stopper, maybe a cabonation pump or spritzer.......it looks related to the bottle in some fashion ......corkscrew ????

Simon, my guess would be that it is the metal end of a flag staff.
