Hello,

I'm planning a trip from Los Angeles to Orick, california in few weeks and I was wondering if you guys have recommendations on where to metal detect. I was told the Orick area is in the state park and it's not permitted to metal detect there.

I grew up metal detecting woods and old Roman ways in Europe but here in California I only went to beaches and parks. My finds were not that exciting and I want to change that this time.

Any recommendations?

Thank you.

I don't know what part of the geographic area known as "Orick", that you are referring to. And I don't know the divisions of admin. within the borders (eg.: state vs city vs county vs fed, vs private, etc....). But I see that you reference "state parks" in your post question.

So here's the deal on CA state parks : Fortunately there is not any border to border prohibition for CA state parks. Unless (for a few of the obvious historic sensitive monuments) specifically stated as such . Eg.: Folsom lake, for example ... long story  . But unless specifically listed "no md'ing", at a few individual ones, then No : There is no blanket border to border rule for CA state parks. (and best left that way)

For example : You can hunt CA state park beaches till you're blue in the face . And they are overseen by the exact same department that administers their inland parks. Hence, as said : Not disallowed.

The ONLY things that could apply is : 1) Cultural heritage boiler plate verbiage . Ok then : Avoid obvious historic monuments. Avoid archaeologists conventions. And : You're only finding new coins, right ? 2) Alter & deface boiler plate verbiage. Ok fine : Avoid nice manicured lawns when busy-bodies are watching. Fill your holes, etc...
