Mercedes Gold!

I'm lucky to get that, I average 12 mpg but I'm pulling a trailer as well... there are still people here without power its amazing. mine crapped out 3 times today I heard a transformer making that I want to explode sound.
The 2500 with 8 foot bed -is heavier than yours , and you get less  what does the trailer weigh, I have an 18 foot v nose when I pull it I, get around 11 , but not to long ago I put 65 psi tires on the dual axle , should get better now maybe 12

I like the Toyota , was going to get a Tacoma but the went to 4 banger power Trane , now the 6 will pass without towing, but the hell with a 4 .
I bought my first 4 runner back in 1990 when I lived in NY. I kid you not, the salesman's name was Elvis Presley.
I thought he was joking until he handed me his business card.

After I ran that truck into the ground I bought a Tacoma in 2002. Then switch over to Ford after they tried to refuse taking the Gov bailout money. My 2014 F150 had a major engine failure at 68k miles then gave them one more shot when I traded it in for a 2018. The engine on that one failed at 98k miles so I said F' that and went back to Toyota. Unfortunately it was just after the Covid hoax in the fall of 2022 and all Toyota dealerships still couldn't get many 4Runners so the few they did get they jacked the living chit out of the prices. So I took a good screwing on the price because they wouldn't come down. The sad part is, I don't think any vehicle prices have come down since the great hoax.

Nice little chunk of Gold!!!! Amazing how much a set cost..Wow!!

Thanks! I was very relieved to see and feel the weight when I pulled that little guy out of the scoop!
Last night out of paranoia that my acid test might have been wrong, I sanded down an edge of it and tested it again just to make sure and BAM 14K passed again!

And don't talk any smack about my little tank. I trashed two new F150's with less than 90,000 miles after buying them brand new. I'll never buy another Ford for the rest of my V6 life.
I have a 2019 F-150 XLT 3.5 EcoBoost V6 w/twin turbos. That V6 has serious torque and is scarry fast when in Sport mode, but is pretty economical for a truck, I get around 18-20mpg city/stop & start driving, and around 22-24mpg's highway in Eco mode. On one trip, I got 27mpg highway, but that was flat highway, as soon as I go up a hill, mpg's start dropping as expected.

I bought certified pre-owned with 16K miles in either March or May of 2020, just as Covid was hitting. I lucked out, shortly after I got the truck, they started jacking up prices because they couldn't get inventory due to Covid screwing up supply chains. Dealerships started calling customers and offered to buy back their trucks at ridiculous prices, like $10K or $15K more than they originally paid. I paid $31,900, and although it had a little over 16K miles, it was cherry, totally spotless. There wasn't a speck of dust or dirt on the engine, everything looked totally new, so they apparently have some top-notch pro detailers working there.

All I've done since owning is oil changes every 5K mile, and earlier this year, I had a complete service to exchange all fluids with new, replace all grease, repacked the rear gears, all preventative stuff like that. When I was driving home, I definitely noticed the truck felt smoother, gear shifts were smoother, and the truck felt like it was smoothly gliding down the road. I only have 53K miles on the truck, so in the last 6.5 years, only averaged about 5.5K miles per year. But that's because I worked remote from home, so truck sits out front all week, only drove on weekends to go shopping, or occasional trip down to the beach. And 3K of those miles was from yearly work trips I made to Ohio. But now retired, so no more mega mile work trips to deal with.

That all said, I do have to schedule my truck in for a recalled item. It's been part forgetfulness & part procrastination, since I wasn't driving the truck much, but my truck is part of the years where they need to replace the cam phasers. Apparently, the original design didn't hold up too well, so the parts were redesigned to fix the issue. Problem is, in order to replace those cam phasers, they need to remove the entire body of the truck and lift the entire body up with overhead cranes, to give them enough room to access the front of the engine. That means I'll be without the truck for a day or two, so that added to my procrastination. I can hear the issue briefly at start up, hasn't been much of a problem, but I know it could turn into one so I gotta make that appointment. But other than that, the truck has been flawless, never failed to start, all electronics & window motors work perfectly. So, personally, I love my truck & have been well pleased with the lack of issues and how well it's been holding up. I might want to get a new one with V8 Coyote engine & 6.5' bed at some point. But I'm a bit concerned about all the freaky AI technology mandated for auto companies to install in their vehicles starting in 2027, so I just might decide to hang on to my "AI less" 2019. Just 2 more payments to go & the truck is totally mine!

That's the exact Freak-o-boost truck (both of them 2014 & 2018) I had. They both had catastrophic engine failures around 90k miles.
I'd ditch that POS if I were you.

Edit: I will say I miss the power and gas milage those freak-o-boost have. My little tank is a gas pig and a dog. But it's reliable.

Did you get the cam phasers replaced under the recall? Was it the cam phasers that caused the engine failures or if not, what was the cause?

Just wondering if it might have been caused by something that could have been prevented. I've seen a lot of posts from other guys who got 200K - 300K miles on their trucks, so I don't think it's something that happens to every single truck, there always seems to be some type of contributing factors involved.

Turbo issues along with other issues Sand --- https://powerengines.com/blogs/engi...st-turbo-failure-a-2026-troubleshooting-guide

Yeah, I've heard about the turbo issues, as they can be finicky and with rpm's that high, something could break at some point. I do two things that can help either prevent problems or extend turbo life.
  1. Although I don't drive these days with a heavy foot, I will pop the truck into Sport mode every now & then, then I'll punch the pedal to the metal to open up the turbos. I've heard from others on truck forums that occasionally opening up the turbos can help keep the metal flap gates from sticking if unused for long periods. Kinda a use it or lose it type thing.
  2. Also got another tip from the truck forums that I started using. When I get back from shopping or driving somewhere, I'll let the truck idle for 30 seconds to a minute or so, to let the turbos cool down and get their rpms down as well. Several guys have mentioned that this helps extend turbo life, rather than shutting truck off before turbos have a chance to cool.
I'm sure there's more problems that can occur, but these are 2 things in my control that I do to help minimize potential problems.

Forgot to add #3, I also installed a catch can when I first bought the truck to keep sludge and contaminants from being injected back into the engine, and I religiously get my oil changed every 5K miles or before.

I misspoke earlier on the model years I owned. I had it mixed up with the year the trucks died.

My 2011 F150 XLT Freak-o-boost only had 88k miles and was running but was in "Limp mode" with the check engine light on. Dealership diagnosed the problem to be a timing chain issue. They gave me an estimate of $1900 for the repairs and FORD had offered to cover $500 towards the repair. Which pissed me off because I had religiously had all required service done every 5k miles.

I gave Ford one more shot because I enjoyed the truck. Rather than taking the $$ hit on repairing it, I finagled a decent trade in “as is” on a new 2016 F150 XLT Freak-o-boost.

When this one had about 94k miles, I took it to the shop for regular maintenance and told them it was acting strange on acceleration and had been noticing a little blue smoke out the exhaust. I expected to pay for another $250 oil change when I took it in for the maintenance but when they called me they said it would be $11,000!!

They said it had a blown head gasket and that they needed to lift the body off the entire truck to do the repair.
I said “ok, so get it done! I'll stop by after work to pick up a loner car." because I had this truck enrolled in their “True Blue” maintenance program that gave me a 10 yr / 100,000 mile full warranty and they had to cover it.

They said “No” because the warranty only covers engine components but not gaskets.

At this point I lost my ever-loving mind and went off on the bastard like a rabid f-ing dog!
When I got to the dealership I made sure every potential customer in the place heard every single word of what was going on and how they were not standing behind their product or service agreements. Man was I freakin PISSED!

I gently drove the truck home and over the next few days I fought with Ford MoCo and the dealership to cover this to no end. I had all the paperwork that proved I had paid for all the required maintenance which included all the extra BS additive crap and engine flushed ect... to ensure the engine and tranny is properly maintained, which is why they charged me a minimum of $250 every dam oil change. They wouldn’t stand behind their product or service agreement, so I told them to shove their POS Ford up their ass until they choked on it and drove across the street and bought my 4Runner.

I was open and honest with the Toyota salesman about it blowing a little blue smoke and they still gave me a very nice trade-in for it. I wasn’t happy about the new prices on any of the new Toyotas but at least I was out of that POS freak-o-boost.

I later discovered the ongoing issues the freak-o-boost had with leaking valve guides and cylinder head issues which I strongly suspect was what was wrong with my F150 but they tried to get me to foot the bill on the repair. They had even told me that if they find anything else while they had it apart that they would cover any engine components.

Never again!

But you have fun driving your freak-o-boost like a little old lady and setting in your driveway wasting gas to let the turbos cool down (that you never used) and adding aftermarket band-aid catch cans and other chit to your ride.

Man BS, sorry you had such bad luck. I think your 2016 had a previous generation engine, my 2019 has the next generation engine that started with the 2018 models. I got the extended warranty on my F-150, runs for 9 years or 120K miles. I'm at 53K miles so the years will run out before I hit the mileage limit. The cam phasers are covered by the recall, but they need to lift the body, so I'll be without for a day or two. They'll install the new design cam phasers, but I'm wondering if they'll replace the timing chain or just reuse the old. Seems to me, if they already have everything torn apart to replace the phasers, wouldn't make sense to reuse the old chain, much better preventative maintenance to replace with a new chain while they're in there. Heck, I'd even pay for a new chain if the recall didn't cover, reusing the old one is just kicking the can down the road IMO.

I turned 69 today, and drive my truck like a normal guy, but I still get a wild hair up my butt every now & then and will hit the turbos. They're very useful when I need a boost to get through a yellow before it turns red, or if I need to get away from and pass an old lady driving in front of me. I just don't need to squeal or chirp wheels like I did when I was 17 and had my 69' 302 Mustang. Turbos suck gas, and the older I get, the more I want to preserve mpg's & engine, and the less interested I am in getting a ticket. For those of us with CCW's, getting pulled over presents an entirely new set of potential challenges. Luckily, my son is retired Police, so I have a special sticker he gave me for the truck that has gotten me out of tickets on several occasions.

BTW, a catch can isn't a band-aid my brotha, it's cheap insurance and a smart play. That can gets emptied during every oil change, and when you see the sludge & gunk caught in the can, you wouldn't want that sludge injected back into your engine. That can isn't vanity or look cool chit, it's a keep that crap outta my engine and free from nasty sludge chit. How are you doing with the Toyota, how's it holding up?

Well Happy Birthday man!
Boy, 69 years old. No wonder you drive like a little old lady. :oldguy:

Hopefully your engine is in fact "improved" and it last you a long long time.
Although you have a major recall in your hand that begs to differ with that thought.

Adding any aftermarket chit like a catch can is precisely a band aid fix for a known design flaw. You shouldn't have to add a dam thing to your vehicle to prevent engine damage.
Plus, in some instances people have been denied warranty coverage after installing those catch cans. All depends on the dealership or weather or not the chief mechanic got laid the night before.

There is a federal law that prevents manufactures from voiding warranties for such items unless the MOCO can prove the failure was caused by the aftermarket device (or its installation).

And the MOCO has a chit ton more attorney's than the average joe schmoe, and a library full of evidence and case studies to back them up. So good luck with that battle.

My little tank is holding up perfectly like my previous 4 runner and Taco did. Just flipped 55k miles on her so I have a long ways to go before she retires.

I rigged up my Eco-Flow solar generator running 10ga wires to the rear so that it gets charged whenever the engine is running. I can run my Fridg and charge all my crap and run a fan all night. Makes for a great mini camper for when I'm out in the mountains chasing critters. I plan on heading to the beach soon to do some beach hunting and have found a couple of places I can camp for a couple nights for free.
