I have a garrett at pro. my main detector is a technetiks t-2. I am thinking about adding the nokia legend....thoughts?

Do you do beach? Because its rather chatty on wet sand.

No it's not.

It probably wasn't in Beach MW mode along with using the salt stability control, or it wasn't properly ground balanced, or the sensitivity was set too high.

EDIT: When the Legend was originally released, there was an issue with chattiness under some salt conditions, but that was quickly fixed with an update. I guess it could be possible that the Legend that was being used wasn't updated.

If they have fixed the problem than everyone on youtube doesnt seem to know they did.

I've seen countless videos and read countless reports of the Legend's performance in salt ground. Of those, the only reports of the Legend being chatty in salt conditions was because the user did not know about the St control (salt ground fine tuning) and/or was using a Legend that wasn't updated.

There is fierce competition between XP, Nokta, and Minelab, as well as "die hards" for each of those manufacturers. If the Legend had an issue in salt conditions, then believe me, it would be posted all over the detecting forums and all over the detecting Facebook pages.

It depends on the date of the YouTube video and whether the user is running updated software.

Also, the Vanquish 540 and the other Vanquish models I have used generally are very quiet detectors even on milder saltwater beaches and in high EMI conditions. Don't expect that kind of quiet performance from the Legend. It is a high gain, super sensitive detector that acts like it. It will also hit smaller targets that the Vanquish models simply will not detect. The same goes for unmasking and separating targets and for handling pretty bad ground conditions. So the Legend has a lot of horsepower along with plenty of features and capabilities that the Vanquish models don't have.

A T2 and a Legend would just about cover any normal metal detecting tasks with the AT Pro for backup/loaner status.

So the chirping just a bi-product of the detector than and there is no way to get rid of it? Legend was one of my options for an upgrade but I won't be able to deal with the constant chirping/falsing. If it wasn't for that one annoyance, the price is great vs performance, but If I have to pay more and wait longer to afford the nox 700 to not get the chirping/falsing than it is what it is I guess.

Jtracs,

If someone experiences chirping that they can't eliminate on the Legend (or any other high gain detector), then it's almost always caused by user error. More specifically, a lack of knowledge about all the controls on the particular detector, how they work, and what they accomplish.

To address your specific question:

Yes, it's a byproduct of all high gain detectors. Higher amplification on the receiver will also amplify ground and EMI noise. In highly mineralized / salt ground, or high EMI sites, that extra receiving amplification might not be useable. If such is the case, then you reduce the sensitivity (gain) level to something more equivalent to the 540's gain level.

Quieting any high gain detector like the Equinox models, Deus 2 and the Legend is easy to do but you will also severely quiet their performance As a result. Minelab did that quieting down for us on the Vanquish models with their very conservative internally preset settings, no user ground balance and automatic noise cancelling. It’s mostly a matter of what you feel comfortable with as a user. Some have said the same about the F75 and T2. So it’s not a matter of a faulty or problematic high gain detector that can’t be settled down. It’s just the difference between an entry level VLF detector and detectors with lots more adjustability and power under the hood.

Got it, well ill keep legend as an option still. I found two rings tonight with the V540 tonight so i have a soft spot for it, ita just works so dam well.
